Hello folks I'm going to look at a John Deere 1020 with a 47 loader Tomorrow. It's a gasser about 40 HP at the PTO utility tractor and from what I've been told that model is historically a good piece of machinery. It's been restored as far as ignition, hydraulic lines and some other new parts and paint. It also has new tires. The price is $8,500 or best offer. At first and second glance this seems a little high to me given the 4500 hours even though tractor prices are out the roof right now but I'm also not very knowledgeable as my Allis chalmer CA is my one and only tractor. I know it depends on what kind of hours and how it was used but for a tractor of this horsepower is $4,500 considered high? I will be using the PTO quite a bit for brush hogging or flail mowing and also tiller work also medium duty front end loader work. Thanks for reading my post.

here are some to compare to that sold last year... Im sure the prices have gone up somewhat.... A loader will add value also.. Condition is everything.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Some have tried to correlate the hours to MILES on a truck engine... If you say you average 40 miles PER HOUR on the road, then 40 x 4500 = 180,000 miles... Thats on the high side, but not maxed out.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I got 2 6080’s I just over 10,000 hours the other just under I got a third one reads 6500 but thinking it’s really 16,500 hours. Get into the 8x00 Deere’s 14,000 is not unheard of. It’s not the hours it’s how it was driven and maintained.

Well thank you to all your replies. With limited tractor knowledge I need to just take my time and do my homework. Everyone have a nice Father's Day tomorrow.

If it is related to a 2010, run away from it. My dad bought a 2010 new. Nearest thing to nothing any one ever saw. PTO was worthless.            MACK

You also(at least I do) gotta consider with a loader it's been worked hard.  To me a 40hp tractor ain't worth that much.

The 1010 and 2010's were pieces of crap. The 1020 and 2020 were better. Loader tractors are a gamble. For that series engine its very possible do for an overhaul. If the shifting is sloppy I would stay away as trany will need work

We had a 1520, which would be just a tad bit bigger I’d think. It treated us well and lasted forever. BUT, ours was a 3 cylinder diesel, which would be significant. Price seems high, you could try to negotiate, or at least investigate service history.

not sure when JD started using Yanmar engines in the little tractors but 5 to 7000 hrs are very possible as long as they had clean air! Check the air filters and stick a white rag as far back inside the pipe as you can reach.

I would be more worried about the ware especially on the front end and hitch linkages before I would be afraid of hours. I know of a few tractors that have never had the head off that are 8,000+ hour tractors and still going strong. I have seen tractors with several thousand hours be tight yet and I have also seen tractors be totally clapped out by 3,000hours.

I to have a CA and have a 67 JD 2020 with a 47 loader.

I bought my 2020 about 7 years ago with right at 2900 hours for 7500 and it was real clean and not beat to hell.

the 1010/2010 had a deck plate that the cylinder sleeves were all permnantly attached.
The 20 series rectified that.

The 47 is sort of an odd ball loader, the tilt cylinders are off set to the inside from the arms but it is a quick tach loader(one of the first i think) and if you have the stands it can be off or on in less than 10 mins which is real nice.  Decent capacity(My tires are fully ballasted and I can get a load on that I have no traction.

As others have said its condition.  Many loader tractors are beat to hell.

Also options matter, does it have the big hyd pump or small? One or two scv valve? There was three different transmissions.  Could be had with dual stage clutch or true live pto.  fixed 3 point arms or pull out arms?  Is it the fixed axles, the "row crop" with adjustable front axle and multi position rear hubs/rim, or the low profile?

My tractor has every option except the live pto I while I was looking for an Allis 170/175 I think I came out pretty good.  I would dare to say that the 20 or 30 series john deere utility tractors were the pinnacle of utility tractors.  They had closed center hydraulics, very nice steering, Decent ergonomics, and probably due to the closed center hydraulics were much cooler to operate when doing heavy work.  Other marks made you legs excessively hot from transmission housing heat.  Later tractors started turning up smaller and smaller engines and had less and less weight(iron) and therefore less traction.

had to pick up a gasket maybe two years ago at the dealer and looked at a new 5065e.  What a joke.  There was no advancement what so ever (many regressions however).  compared to the 67 2020.  Ok maybe it did have a nice joystick loader valve but with closed center systems its super easy to put a loader joystick on the 20 series tractor to.  I added to mine along with a third function.  Working on a SSQA plate now.
