If you find a 6070 with serial #1972 be sure to buy it.  That was the last tractor to come out of West Allis.

I hear that the 5050 is a good dependable machine.  I was looking for one myself for a while.  I've got a 5040 and it sips fuel.

5050 is a good tractor but parts may be a little hard to come by. The 5050 and the 6070 drive train were Fiat built. Both great tractors very few problems.
The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

1972 is in a collection in WI.  Economical, yes.  Can't speak about anything else from experience.

The 6070 is an upgraded 6060.  Replaced the 8 speed tranny with a 12 speed from the 6080.  The Allis 433 engine is very fuel efficient and you would be suprised by how much power it puts out.  While it does have several Fiat components, it should be noted that final assembly was in West Allis. 
Never used a 5050, but it is a Universal tractor built in Romania.  Some other manufacturers used this as one of their models as well.
The 6070 would get my vote.  They were made in 1984 and 85.  The few problems of the 6000 series were sorted out by then.

the 5050 is a fiat license tractor that was built in romania,
fiat built many of these and sold them to market in the us ,these tractors where sold under the oliver, minneapolis moline, allis, long, heston  brands, with the allis primarily using the romainian built tractors, same basic tractor just not quite as good a finish as the fiat built units
parts are readily available for these and here is a good buyers primer, that is posted  by the internet guru on these tractors, 
 
take the time to read his comments and look his site over
 
 
i have a 1970 model 1355, oliver (same tractor)that has over 10000 hrs on it and the only thing that has ever been done to it is a new clutch, and thrush washers for the front end.
 
this was the primary tractor around here for years, the draw bar hole is nearly completely worn through , but it starts and runs as good today as when it was new
 
i also have a 6060 that i have fallen in love with, i like the tractor, but it only has 3000 hrs on it and i dont know what it will look like after 10000 hrs.
 
the 6060 is easy on fuel, about 4 gph under plows, but the fiat oliver will work all day at 2gph pulling 3x14s
 
the ease of driver access is much better on the 6060 than the 1355, butt the fiat is a comfortable tractor once i am in the driver posistion
 
the allis 5050 is not going to bring anything near what the 6070 will and both tractors are foriegn built, i have heard on here that the 433t is an allis enjine, but the block is marked france,
and i believe they had the 6060/6080,front bearing issue fixed by the time they put out the 6070
they both use the fiat 2 lever pto system and these are different than the american systems, but just as good, the 5050 if like the 1355 has the option to run pto as live or ground driven,
here is a video i shot last month showing both tractors at work pulling plows, the 6060 is pulling 3x16s. the 1355 is puling 3x14s
 i have seen a lot of rough looking old 5040-5050s so like in anything else it would depend on condition
i like old tractors of all colors

While I don't know where the engine block came from, I doubt it was France.  Most likely, it was the foundry at West Allis or another US foundry.

For sure, the engine was designed, machined, assembled, and tested in the Allis plant in Harvey, Illinois.  While the transmission and final drive were made by Fiat, all the 6000 series tractors were assembled in West Allis.  The cab, platform, wheels, tires, fuel tank, air cleaner, muffler, radiator, batteries, controls, 2WD front axle, front frame and axle mount, hydraulics, etc. were all US sourced.

that is what i thought also but my 6060 has france on the right hand side in the block forging, just above oil pan and in front of starter
 i did not notice this untill i was under it a couple weeks back, i will get a photo today and post
i like old tractors of all colors

I purchased a 6070 new in 1985.  It has 7500 hours on it - mostly PTO work - and the engine and drive train are untouched.  This is a great tractor.  The engine used in the 6000s was originally used in Gleaner combines.  I saw 6000s being assembled at West Allis on a plant tour.  Also, a note to Mark 427435 - you did a great job on the 6000 and 8000 series tractors!  Mitch & Barb in West Michigan

By the 80's Allis was having the engine blocks cast by a factory in France.   We had a late 185 with "France" cast in the block.

Blocks from France are surprising------especially in the 185.  The West Allis foundry didn't close until about 1981------------I had always thought the castings for the engine plant came from there.  The tractor division had no choice as to where to buy our engines-----------I wonder why they were able to buy castings from some other source??  I would have also thought that the freight from France for a chunk of cast iron would have been price prohibitive. 

On the other hand, there were lots of strange things going on at AC in those days.
