    Posted: 04 May 2012 at 7:32am

The B that I am working on has foot operated brakes and the donor B has hand operated brakes.

The covers over the brakes on both tractors have the slots and 2 bolt holes.  Some that I have seen on Ebay only have one bolt hole and a longer slot.  Which are correct for the foot operated brakes?

Also, one of the covers is broken and came off pretty easy.  The other is intact and I cannot figure out how to get it off.  The adjustment screw is frozen and once I get that to turn maybe it will allow enough movement for the cover to be removed.

The manual indicates that the seat frame and fenders must be removed to get the brake bands removed.  Is that the case or can they removed with the fenders and seat frame in place?

Finally, does anyone out there have a good set of the correct brake covers they would be willing to sell?  The 4 that I have on both tractors are pretty rough.

You my friend are about to get an education. I, myself are not part of the correct police when it comes to the covers. The longer slot is for hand brakes though.

The manual is correct. You will have to remove the seat frame.  I now, after doing a bunch of brakes on the B's, C's and CA's, tremove the final drives and take the bands out the open end rather than pull them up thru the as the manual will explain.

To get the adjusting screw out (I) use heat and plenty of it. I just heat the threaded pin and not the bolt/screw.  That expande the pin faster than the bolt and will turn out.

Look thru these pictures and see how I get the pins out.

I completed my first ever B/C/CA brake job last weekend on my CA.  If you don't take Dick's great advice and remove the final drive (I didn't... this time) then I'll give you one tip that really made things easier for me... I'm sure I read it here at some point.

... once you have the pins out and you're ready to remove the old bands, jack up the side you're working on(be safe... block the other side) so you can rotate the tire/wheel and also the brake drum.  That will really help push the band out.  Then do the same thing as you're fishing the new one back in to place.  Also, do as others have said and put a piece of clothes-hanger sized wire on the end of the band that will come out last.  Then unhook it from the old band and use it to help pull the new band into place.

And I'll second what Dick said... you're about to be educated... I know I really was.

studetom,  Play very close attention to what is said above.  I replaced bands when the B-C-CA was relatively new.  Therefore, the rat's nests had not formed, the bolts were relatively loose, and the parts like the brake bands were not rusted in place.  We had a time even then.  Especially with one CA that was used in an orchard spray machine. The coating of the spray froze everything.   Frankly, if I knew that tractor was coming in for a brake job I tried to take a day off.
As Dick L says you have an education coming.  Be certain to do what the master says.  That is outstanding information.
Also, let me wish you the very best of fortune when you are doing it.  As Murph says string a wire behind the band being removed and use it to pull the new band back.
It is obvious you are taking good care of my favorite.  Thank you for what you are doing to keep the Allis Chalmers name alive.
Good Luck!

Thanks for all of the help.  I was able to get the adjusting screws out and then the brake covers (foot operated brakes).  The pins on both sides of the tractor nearest the front came out with little problem.  The rear ones are going to need some additional encouragement.  I applied rust penetrant liberally to both of them today and will attempt to remove them later in the week.

Again, I appreciate all of the help.
