Hi All,
We recently received a 51’ HD5B in trade. We set out to lubricate the entire machine, change fluids and have already rebuilt cylinders/ hydraulic pump. We ran across issues while trying to find the oil hole on the front idler. The service manual says there is a cap screw and a oil plug on the front idler. We removed both bolts on the exterior plate which the shaft goes through, behind it were two shims. Both bolts being the same size (different from what the manual suggested) leads me to believe we are trying to grease the wrong location. We have got the oil plug out of the support rollers. I was confused while reading the manual, it mentions having to pull off the tracks to grease service the truck rollers. Is this true? The dozer has an easy life ahead of it, we don’t think it saw much work originally-everything is in great condition and starts surprisingly well. Is there anything else to consider before we put her back to work? Thanks in advance. |

Welcome to the forum. let me first say this post would get more attention in the construction equipment section and hopefully a moderator will see it and move it there.
The lube hole for the front idler will be on the end of the shaft similar to the support rollers. If your machine has a dozer blade it likely has sway brackets blocking the plug like you mentioned (i think). Also possible its on the inside of the idler toward the machine. If there is no plug its possible the idlers were replaced with the newer style that doesnt have an oil hole. The truck rollers should be greasable without removing the tracks. if you have to adjust bearings in them, might be a different story. probably a good idea to drain and refill finals and transmission/bevel gear compartments if you have not. who knows how long the oil has been in there and what contaminants might be hiding.

Thank you, I’ve gotten the final, idler, support and trucks all properly greased. Unfortunately I noticed extreme wearing of the left side idler. I was reading a thread earilier on a similar issue. I’m considering building up and resurfacing it myself, it looks like someone had already done this to the other side with good success.
I’m might try searching around for a replacement. Is there a master link to take the track apart or do I need to pull the pins. I’m currently draining final and transmission. Can you verify the fluid called forthese reservoirs? |

there will be a master pin identifiable by a dimple in the center or it will be slightly longer than the others. i run 80-90 in my transmissions/bevel gear section (HD16, HD10 and HD6) because they are not pressure lubed and engine oil in the finals like the manuals show, since oil too thick in there can under lube the upper bearings.

My manual says 3 gallon capacity (each side) for the finals.
How would I check the level of the fluid? Take off the fill plug and fill until it leaks out? |
