Did a search looking for info for you - and came up with the same picture. ebay https://www.google.com/search?q=Allis+tractordata+Forklift+FTP+40&biw=1093&bih=524&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=rf82tUI56BMwYM%253A%252Cj3mAErdfunwDSM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kSAmEl3T4E2aCadQ8aGENtCFB0gvA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiS8auXgofpAhXJPM0KHVbRCDIQ9QEwBnoECAoQBQ#imgrc=rf82tUI56BMwYM: |

I bought one like that with the engine smoking, no doubt it was well used and had high hours but the air cleaner was quite plugged. After addressing that problem, the smoking was gone.

I had read this being the case several time but on mine the hose that connects the air cleaner to carb is missing.

Well been tinkering with my new toy when I have a spare moment. I really need to figure out the smoking. It doesn't have air cleaner hooked up so its not restricted air cleaner. It smokes really bad on start up but longer it runs the less it smokes. I am thinking possible head return hole plugged up. Trying to find valve cover gasket but no luck locally and unsure of any I find on the net. Have looked at Liberated Manuals and no luck finding a manual so far.
This thing has leaf springs on the steer axle and 1 is broken as a quick fix I am going to attempt to weld the eye back to the spring if I can figure a way to get to it. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

To get at the spring you will have to make yourself a bracket for grabbing low down on the side of your forklift as you place a hyd. jack in the bracket to be able to lift it up, that is what I made. Once you get it up a bit you have room for a bottle jack to go under. Just be sure it's all safe by the time you start working underneath. You'll need to pull the spring assembly out to get decent welding results. Maybe you're a good welder already, however, for the hardness of the steel in the spring it's crucial to do it right or it will bust again. This is not a welding job that allows for any compromise given the weight of the forklift.
As for the engine smoking... if it's over a while after start-up it maybe a case of the oil coming down the valve guides when parked several hours or overnight. A while after running the next day the smoke quits once burned off (relatively easy fix). If it were the piston rings worn out there is far less smoke on start-up and then when the engine warms up it starts smoking far worse. In such a scenario it can be a case of stuck piston rings also, from having been parked several years. If this situation is within reason you can change oil and use one quart of Rislone engine treatment for loosening gum & deposits and the rings will come loose after a few hours of warm running. I've had good success using it. Some engines are beyond hope with this method. Then you have to put up with smoke or spend $$. Have fun with you project.

Thanks for the info I am going to pull plugs and see how bad they look and as soon as I find a valve cover gasket and oil filter take care of those items. The spring will be the last thing do and it will most likely be a patch job for now as the plan is you use it to help erect a addition to my shop. Then I will work at fixing replacing spring.

If you have too much trouble finding a valve cover gasket you can buy a good quality gasket maker in a caulking size tube. I used that on a valve cover some years back, it worked great. It was a darker red color but I don't remember the name on it. An automotive parts man will know.

yep 40 years as professional mechanic so know of all the sealants but sure prefer a gasket if possible. Steiners list a gasket for 20$ but going to check locally first. All other sources online so out of stock.

So you say the excessive smoke is on start up... does it run relatively smoke free after a minute or two? If it does it's just worn valve guides, I have done ''easy fix'' for that problem several times.

![]() You have an interesting project on your hands there and it can get expensive and is definitely not for the faint of heart. I've come to the conclusion that most folks mis-spell the word forklift.. it is actually spelled $f$o$r$k$l$i$f$t$.. but ya just gotta love those old warriors.. Feel free to message me if I can be of any help or if you need a shoulder to lean and cry upon in frustration, Maybe I can help or just sit back and let you vent from time to time.

By the way, I can give you the part number for the gasket I have if you want it.. Mine is still sealed in the box.

Got it running again after pulling valve cover and a tune up. And this time the smoke never stopped. it seems to have a weak cylinder so now to find parts to do engine tear down. But it did get the load of boards moved for me.

Yes, that is a generous smoke show... it is still a usable forklift, just don't inhale that smoke too long
