    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 at 4:26am
I blew a spark plug out of an aluminum head yesterday... Wis.V4 to be exact... in a 610 BC skid steer.
I called all over today looking for the kit to put a new Helicoil in and ZIP!  Can't get an 18mm, but  can get 14mm kits everywhere at a cheap enough price.  Could have had an 18mm kit about 15 years ago for about 29 bucks. Now Napa wants 190 something for it... and o'ripoff wants 199 dollars and some on ebay want up to 298...  Feel thats a little much for a tap, considering the helicoil is only about 10 bucks for 6.
Looks like I am going to have to take the head off and find a machine shop maybe... Any others got suggestions or maybe a helicoil tap they would loan? Thanks

pretty sure I have a set that came with a big Craftsman 900 pc tool kit I bought when I first started wrenching. I think I've used one of the inserts lol! I'll look later when I get to the shop. I'd sure think you'd be able to find some on ebay.

Was looking too ... came across these...
Another question is, are spark plug threads the same as regular metric bolt threads?
I was also told to look for spring stainless helicoils for sparkplug applications.

Kinda wonder if all 'helicoils' are of the same dimension. probably not.
The Heli-coil set listed looks like it is a two step tap , but I would think that it should have a drill applied to the hole to start the larger tap in...?

The 'v-coil' set needs the drill bit too and is about $96 bucks from Britain... The above M18 set is 48 bucks

and the 'Thread Kits (1218-500 Thread Repair Kit' I about $63...I'm going to keep looking... for awhile.
Thanks Chask, Pirlbeck and DD..

just looked at my old kit, and it only has 14mm. Just has a few different lengths. 18mm X 1.5 thread should be that, no matter what the application. If it's different, the pitch will be different, such as 1.25, or 1,75, or 2.0. Just keep in mind, most spark plug inserts are a solid insert, not heli-coil style. Good luck with the 18mm.

I have not done it, but the "OLD" F150 with 5.4 motors around 1999 had a problem with pulling the thread.. Not enough threads......... Reading on the FORD sites they specify NOT to use the Helicoil.... use a "thread insert"........ apparently they are not all the same... Isnt a "helicoil" just a spring wound into the hole ?  I know its a generic name for many brands, but I think you want a SOLID THREADED BAR, not a spring.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Helicoil is just a spring like thread. They are ok for something you don't need to take apart and put back together much, and wouldn't be my choice for a spark plug thread.

OK, I'm wondering if you could install a regular plug( 14mm) using a helicoil that'll fit the existing hole( if retapped clean) ??

My first plan would be to find a used head,  the old wisconsin v4 is mostly obsolete and I would think there are lots of heads around.

There were lots of different V4 Wisconsins.   VE4, VF4, VH4, VG4.   Heads are not interchangeable from VG4D to any of others. Not sure about the first three. VP4 preceded the VG4, but would be too old to have been in a bobcat.

Continuation ... I picked up the Heli-coils today that I ordered 12-31-19. The package says "DO NOT use Heli-Coil wire inserts to repair tapered seat spark plug ports."  ???
Wonder what makes the difference... Might push the heli out into the cylinder wall and let the plug get loose?
Maybe no gasket under the plug to allow for metal expansion?
or the seat of the plug start squishing down the blocks threads that hold the Heil coils and distort the threads... to me that would be the most logical.

610 Bob Cat is alive again!
Heli-coil job would have been easy-peasy If I had just followed the instructions as tho it were a new tool... It took about 5 minutes to use the tap with grease on it... and there was enough room to do it between the head and valve in block. Had a smudge of grease on the valve from the end of the tap so it was close. Then used the tool for putting in the heli-coil. Tool squeezes the heli-coil down and starts it in the new thread of the head and sets the height of the heli-coil in the head too...Well, the tool was set to deep and had two turns in the head farther than was suppose to be. Censored AngryCensored Got ready to pull the head off and then decided to reach in and see if I could pull the heli wire out through the spark plug hole... and was successful at doing that. Then put another heli-coil in and broke the tang off,  Threaded the spark plug in and tightened it down and I thing it is going to work out okay.
Thanks Norm Mienert for helping me out.
