Feb 4 I got up feeling fine and about 15 minutes after I got to work heart burn kicked in. Then my jaw started to hurt, I'm two blocks from the firehouse so I went down walked in and got in the back of the Medic unit. My paramedic put the monitor on and it was normal. She talked me into going in and getting checked out. Well when we got to the ER there was 3 medics ahead of us so it was standing room only. The plugged me into this box and said put this in your pocket and go to the waiting room. That's when Fred Lucabaugh called. Well we talked awhile and then I waited awhile and after a few hours they found a bed. They didn't find anything wrong at first but after the second lipid test it came back slightly elevated then I had this 16 seconds of VTeck ? I think thats what they said it was. I was on my way to the Cath Lab. They put a stent in my right corroded artery, said it was 100% blocked. My Eco cardio gram showed some damage but my 2nd one two weeks later is normal.
Guys I am too young for this BS I'm only 56 I gotta do something about it. Fred No more Hot dogs!!

Dave, glad you got it taken care of, when the old ticker is not doing right it can be downright dangerous. Often the 12 lead will not show the problem and it takes more specialized tests to find the problem. Glad your medic made you got to the ER and you are still with us. 100% blockage on the carotid artery is nothing to ignore (of course mine would probably be "corroded" arteries). Take care of yourself, 56 is way too young to be having these problems.

Around here you can get a heart scan to check for calcium build-up. Costs $50. I’m amazed that Dr’s don’t make that a part of every physical. I tell everyone I know to go do it and keep track of your % build up. Takes about 15 mins.

I would not recommend that calcium scan for anybody. It is here also for 100 bucks out of your pocket. I think it is a great money maker for the med facilities cus all old pfarts like me will come up high. We went down that line with the wife - I am not gonna fall for that money maker that seems to always lead to other testing. Just my thought and experience. Hmm, wonder why the insurance companies do not approve the procedure? Well maybe some are paying higher insurance premiums than me.

Had one of those a few years ago. No blockage at all. Will be going soon again. Good preventitive medicine and may save your life. Shouldn't run down a procedure like that for a measly $50-100, guess your life not worth much to you.

Let's just say that every test has both good and bad things about it and from one who has been versed in how the calcium score is performed and analyzed from a CT scan there is much to be desired in it being the do all and save all in dealing with heart health. Before retiring last fall I serviced medical imaging equipment and have had training on the calcium scoring software. It is some what subjective on how it is analyzed and this is why if it shows a problem that you are sent for more precise and additional testing. Bottom line is don't let it give you a false feeling of security that everything is just fine if it finds nothing is wrong.
My recomendation is to get that yearly EKG and it would not hurt a thing if your family has a history of heart health problems to go get a stress test every so many years. Dave I'm glad everything worked out and you are still kicking. 👍👍 |

trace, I don't follow you. have you boned up on the calcium scan and its place in the diagnostic world. Saving money and not being concerned about life - are you spoofing me or trying to stir up $hit, or maybe you are just don't comprehend. We did blow the money on the scan. Oh and by the way we also made a pilgrimage to the Cleveland Clinic for some heart diagnostics. The cardiologist and his fellow there just shook their heads when the scan was mentioned. And before you start talking about the Cleveland Clinic find out how it stacks up in the cardiology clinics in the US of A. It is over my head how you can insinuate that I just do not care bout life, maybe you were talking about someone else and I missed the drift.

was nothing personal but in these times of such high medical costs i'll utilize a test such as this just to rule out major problems coming on. have no history of heart problems but gives me a little piece of mind along the way. notice the cleveland clinic even hawks this test and they give the same disclaimer about not being 100% just as my local hospital did when I got it. life too short to get wound up about nothin.

Glad you're still typing on here Dave!! You did GOOD to think about what was going on and getting to the ER. More people should take heed and think FAST. The acronym stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time to call emergency services.
YES, NO Hotdogs!! OR,,,,,French fries, fried foods, etc... If it TASTES GOOD, it's BAD for ya..... that's what I've been told anyway.... Get into a regular exercise program and start walking a lot. Every little bit helps! WE NEED YA!! |

Had open heart surgery 11-1-17. After 16 months don't expect to be anymore than 60% of the man I was before. Aortic and Mitral valves replaced with swine tissue and they don't even use the valves. How does that work?

Glad you're doing better Dave, but we're never too "young" for this. I had my first of 5 Heart Attacks at 43 my LAD (left anterior descending) artery 100% blocked as well, all 5 times. A lot of people don't realize it's not always chest/arm pain. indigestion, sweating, back pain can all be signs of heart problems. but look on the bright side, the next time you go to the ED with chest pain you will NOT have to wait in line !

Due for a physical, so I think I'll ask the doc about something beyond the regular yearly exam. |

Wow! That's scary for someone with heart attack symptoms. Around here if you go check in at the emergency room and they ask why you are there, if you say heart, they have you in the backroom before you can say attack! On the bed, IV in, asking numerous questions. They gave me 3 nitro pills before the pain went away. After an overnight and numerous tests they decided it was stress, and since I was just starting a new job, I had to agree. I'm glad everyone is okay and recuperating after their problems. I have an EKG every year now when I have my annual physical. They're perfect every year, I'm inactive, overweight and take chloresteral meds, but it seems to be pumping okay!
