well, it finally happened, big repairs on the hd5b bulldozer. the outboard bearing bolted to the track frame went bad, chewed the shaft and needs a new one. i have all the parts but finding time is the issue. my question is, what lubricates these bearings as i am sure the other side is not happy either. i thought there were 2 styles of shafts, one solid and one with a hole drilled in it to allow final drive oil to get to the bearing. i thought dad had put the shafts with the holes in them and i had the finals full but no lube killed the bearing. should i drill and tap and install a grease fitting on the cover? i have a hd5g that i now need to add this to the list of things to check.

Yes there were 2 axels , one with the wick , and also small and large spline for the sprocket.
A lot of machines did have a grease zerk on the outboard bearing as a modification (unsure if it was owner or dealer install) but not factory update. That bearing is a link-belt bearing and is not handled by most bearing houses.
Have seen them also just filled with 90W as well as gun grease. as it is a timken style bearing but barrel shaped rollers and main purpose was for the occelllation of the tractor or dozer truck frame, on a 5G or 6G they do not get as much stress

i have several good bearings and i want to fill it back up with OOOgrade grease so it is very liquidish. not going to rely on the wick this time. my only concern is the seal, i have a few good ones and i am just going to hope the boots hold up. i will put a grease fitting in it to give it the few shots a year whether it needs it or not. i have the coarse spline sprockets. i also have a beautifus set of track rails with pins and bushings shot that i would love to find new for but everyone i ask says discontinued. when the outboard bearing goes bad it wears the rails all kinda funky.

I had one set of rails that were still at servicable height that i just had new pins and bushings pressed into. There are parts out there just getting harder to find them.

BAD WORD CHOICE (that I just had )  was a while back , what i meant to say was,( had p & b  in set of track done )

Might try Northern Tractor in Osseo MN, also Crawler Welding in Mankato MN
Also Norther Engine in Duluth MN area

I did get some  2-71 parts from Northwest Diesel Parts  / think Superior WI a few years back , blower lobe, bearings and such for blower. 715-398-7780

there were 2 axels with large spline / one rifle drilled for wick and one solid.
