Whatever you get, make sure it's a heavy duty battery. High CCA but with many closely-spaced plates is inviting premature battery failure.

The group 31 truck battery with 925 to 950 CCA have been working/lasting good for me.

HMMMMM - Seems since I first bought my HD5G in 1972 the battery issue (as the 2 - 6V ) that came with the machine were bad - I took the battery out of my 66 Chev truck .
WORKED - so since then I have bought  GROUP 34 / 78 or just 34 group since .
I use the same battery in my 715B, 460 IH Utility tractor, Skid loader, 76 GMC tandem, 66 White Tandem , 411 Adams grader, 2 in my FD5 to get 24 volt, and in all the pickups . Used 2 in my 6.2 Diesel pickup and 2nd one in snow plow trucks .
I buy 950 Amp size with 5 or 6 year warranty, with about 15 batteries in service if one went bad just swap them around - take bad one back and put it in service
Had no failures from vibration in equipment - seems most lasted 4 years minimum - not having them on maintainer and setting was the worst .

So one high Amp 12 volt will work - that leaves the other battery box empty for grease gun , either can , mickey mouse ears, and tow chain , hammer and pair of pliers

I use a 950 amp like Coke and my HD-5 will start in the winter with some smelling salts just fine.  The coldest I've started mine is around 15 degrees, needed to move it to get something out.

About 10 years ago the daughters Kia car had a battery go bad when she was shopping. She batted her baby blues at some male that was glad to help her get and put a new battery in. Gets home and has to show me,small Delco battery but was a bit to big one side so hold down didn't fit. She bugged me until I got her a battery that the hold down would fit.

That Delco was close when I needed a battery for the HD 5. Like Coke I am always moving batteries between equipment,so figured it would not last in the crawler long. Ended up staying there for better than 5 years could of been 7. Probably helped it was not run a lot of hours to shack it apart, but was good after sitting 4 or 5 months at a time.It was enough battery to start the 2-71 even though it was not a big battery.

If the 2-71 is good, it doesn't take much... I started an HD19 with a 6-71 that had sat for several yeaars and all I used was just a little bitty jumper pack... I couldn't hardly believe that but there it ws winging the engine over and started right up.
In my HD5, it just gets what ever battery is available at the moment. mostly some old car battery.

Optima works. I would have suggested an AGM but I didn't think you were in the mood to spend that kind of $. Actually an AGM is a good choice for rough service. The mats between the plates tend to keep the cells from shorting out.

AGM batteries is about all I use any more. As the lead batteries need to be replaced I get the AGM's. I don't have the issues of bad batteries any more. Whatever tractor I want to use the battery is always up and ready to go. The oldest one is in my CA. It's 6 volt and over 12 years old now. They are pricey but seem to last longer than the lead ones and have more cca. Course I don't have maintainers on them either. Only one shed with electricity and most of the time the tractors are not parked there.
Thanks & God Bless
