I am looking for a copy of the operators/service manual for my 1952 and 1955 HD5G. I have all the other manuals but I can't find one for the Loader operation. I could use some ompf power lift on the 1955. Thanks guys, Ralph Heck |

Coke-Mat. Thanks for the reply, I will try EBay. I need to figure out how to get more lift power. I had all the seals and hoses replaced. The shop sent out a guy to adjust the thingamajig next to the levers to no avail. I'm hoping the manual will give me some insight. Ralph

Lift power, careful as with a full bucket 1+ yard, of heavy material the machine when backing will tend to transfer weight to front idler wheel.(I have 2 counter-weights on mine) If not careful - bent front axle will result. Pump pressure is aprox 1200 PSI as set by relief valve which is mounted below and to left of controls.
With the large diameter of the lift cylinders, high pressure was not needed. Geometry of the lift cylinders also as they are trunnion mounted also limits the lift and breakout force.
I wish I had more lift height, as newer trucks have higher sides and loading makes it so you need to build a ramp or dig a hole to load over the side.
The Hydreco pump being a gear pump is limited also on pressure, they did have a Vickers vane pump on early machines but that was dropped for a gear pump on later machines.
When I had my pump checked by local shop they said it was shot, but i cleaned up side plates and smoothed out some grooves and it still works OK
I do notice though , when I first got machine if you raised loader to full height and did not push lever to neutral position it would drag engine down quickly, now the drag is not as noticable so I am also having slippage in pump. Edited by Coke-in-MN - 11 Nov 2010 at 12:10pm |

I have one that came with my HD5G (that I still need to do the motor swap on <blush>). It's title is "Master Parts and Instruction Book for Tractomotive MODEL TS-5 TRACTO SHOVEL" Mine is for Serial No. 1 and up. Has Form 873-3-55 on the front. There's about half a dozen pages of "Operating Instructions" and the rest is parts diagrams and lists. If you don't have luck finding one then I can likely copy/scan a few pages from it. cheers, Andrew

Andrew, Thank you for the offer. I got your exact manual from a place on Ebay for $25.00. I was disapointed on the instructions, however, Coke gave me the best advice. Thanks again and I enjoy watching this forum at least once a week. Ralph

Several years back I found a new pump for loader on HD5G - it was for early tractors and was a Vickers vane pump - the coupling to the front of crank was different and trying to find that part was impossible it seemed . So traded pump off .
The later HYDRECO gear pump is another kind of special unit and hard to find a good one of those , I have 2 extra but both are in rougher shape than mine . At 32 GPM flow from pump at 1500 RPM and 1200 PSI - it is not a common unit. The large size of lift cylinders requires a high volume of oil but overall makeup of cylinders does not allow for high pressure in their design. Then between pressure cylinders do generate in force it is enough I bent one lift cylinder rod when a piece of wood got trapped between cylinder end and frame of loader when lifting a bucket of material , between force of the two cylinders and trapped base the rod bent when cylinder could not pivot on trunnions at mid point of barrel .
