I just brought home an AC HD-10 and discovered that I can only shift into the 2/5 neutral and reverse gears I can not get the shifter to move to the left gears. I was wondering what could be the issue. I figured I would ask before I torn into it and ended up with a bigger issue especially since its -20deg F right now here and I don't have a garage so I have been working under a tarp with a porta heater.
Thank you for any help, Joshua

You are a hardier man then me, I'd probably wait til spring thaw. Just a guess but it may be a pin has moved out of place and doesn't allow the lever to move all the way.
Good luck and stay warm! |

yea the problem is I'm hoping to use it in the spring so I wish to have it all together by then I don't want to waste our short summer without a dozer so I have to get inventive. |

probably the fork or gate has slid on the shaft and not allowing shift lever to engage the gate mechanism. doesnt sound more serious than pulling the cover and adjusting to me. or may have a stuck detent or stuck shaft from ice?
also it has been a few years since we sold our 10W but remember the gate is made so you cant just throw foreward and back you have to move lever to the side and then shift. sorry I cant explain better I just cant remember for sure PS. welcome to the forum and I have an uncle in Wasilla AK Edited by CAL(KS) - 23 Dec 2014 at 9:03am |

well I think the issue was a chunk of frozen dirt and mud stuck against the shift lever on the left side, I had the dozer cooking under the tarp and when I removed the floor boards I started pulling still frozen chunks of dirt out from around the leaver base and when I tried to move it again it slipped right into the other gears no problem

It is amazing what the freezing temps will make fail on these old girls. Probably best to change the fluids when you can, probably have water in the oil as well. To check let the machine stay warm, don't run it for at least a day, back the drain nut to almost the last thread, then wiggle it a bit, water droplets will come out of the threads before oil, if none, then no need to drain it.
