Every now and then someone asks about hauling their tractor.  I came across this video in my YouTube feed this morning and thought it might be helpful to someone.

That works, I copied your first one and pasted it into youtube and it came up. I came back to insert the one from youtube for you but you already fixed it.

Not a bad video for small tractors under 10,000 pounds. Some of the replies don't know what they are talking about. Same with everything though. People get mixed up with rules that apply to heaver equipment than he was showing in this video.

OK, while I don't have speakers on this PC I did fastfwd the Messicks video as the BX23s is my new toy and I do need to haul it 'here and there' so I thought it'd be nice to see where he ties down the tractor.
I 'assumed' the yacker was going to show HOW to hold down the tractor ont the trailer.WTH ! He plays with straps and chains in his hands but never, ever ACTUALLY ties down the tractor !!!
A VIDEO should SHOW the proceedure, if you're just going to yack about something, yeesh, kill the useless VIDEO....

Speaking as a lawyer, I know exactly why he talked about general principles, but did not show exact procedure.

The point of the video is to show people that there is more to hauling a tractor than just putting it on a trailer.  As for securing it to the trailer, there are so many variables that they cannot show everything.  The way you tie down your BX is not going to be the same as the way I do my WD or B.

It's just a good overview to get people thinking about what they are doing.

Owning a Tractor Repair Business  Nothing would surprise me of how people chain down tractors seeing how some bring them to Shop.I never help anyone tie down one when they pick them up after repairs. Nor tell them how to .But  WHAT DOSE SCARE me the  most is how they drive them on and off the trailer . If it is not doing Shop hours or if I am not around ,I DO NOT let any drop off or pick up. And some of these guys with Rollback  trucks should not be aloud to haul anything.

I see a lot of nylon straps being used to anchor tractors ,,, rachet straps, etc, I would never use those,, has to be a chain anchoring them down ,,that's just my opinion

I think it only needs to be a chain if the tractor weighs over 10,000 lbs.  The rules are so vague that more is better and some is better than none.

My rule of thumb: I don't care if I'm legally required to use chain or not, I do. I'd much rather have an "oversecured" load than I would an accident. I've never had anything come off a trailer, and hauling equipment sure isn't the time I'd want to break that streak

The way I think about securing my load is not so that it doesn't fall off but that it remains secure in the event of a crash.  You cannot control what other drivers do and the forces caused buy evading another vehicle or those in a crash can exceed the max limits of some securing devices.

I use chain for anything bigger than a garden tractor.  To prevent scratches I use a 2 10k clevis' on the draw bar of my B and feed the chain through a short piece of canvas fire hose where it contacts a painted surface on the others.

What?  I thought putting it in gear and locking the brake was plenty.  Guess I'll need to get another spool of bailing twine now.Pinch

Great video. I think he must have been watching me as I have made a few of those mistakes over the years.

Amazon has 1-inch ratchet straps rated at 500 pounds.  20 of them should hold a 10k load.Wink
