After all the reading I've done and folks I've talked to, for some reason I didn't get that the hand clutch is a "wet" clutch,,either that or I've got a HUGE gearbox leak. Also, Dale Haymaker warned me back awhile ago (and from his own experance) to NOT take out a whole lot of shimms. My tractor had been slipping from the time I got it but was tollerable to use, yesterday when it was cold out and I was driving it across town 4th gear really was slipping bad! I had to pull back on the hand clutch lever to keep it moving, so I took out 4 shimms and now she'll pull wheelies! After I got done pulling the shimms I took it out on the street and put it in 4th gear and pulled back on the hand clutch and with out much throttle, THANK GOD the street was slick!!!cause ole' girl took off like a shot and instead of throwing my self off the back, the back wheels broke traction and I went down the street like a sprint car sidways!!!!ha ha ha!!! I was use to the old way she use to take off! |

If the seal goes out on the pto it will drain the oil....don't run it dry or you will wear out the yoke and then $$$$ to fix. |

No,,it's not dry,,,I'd guess there's about 1 1/2" of gear lube down there?,,,you're saying that SHOULD be there?

Pull the bayonette dipstick on the left side and check your oil level. The hand clutch and the hydraulic pump use the same oil in the same compartment.

Make sure you have the same amount of shims on all 3? sides. If I remember right there are 3 sets in there. You can't remove them from just one side and not the others. They have to be equal all the way around. I pull mine to make sure someone else didn't put in odd amounts.

Not on a WD!!!Hyd oil is separate.Trans,hand clutch and rear share same lube.Two plugs on left check same level but needed when refilling whole compartments because it would take forever for oil to seep through bearings to get in other compartment. "Full" is at the top of the holes.If you are constantly adding hyd oil without much sign of external leaks... it's adding to your trans/rear level and will run out when rear plug is pulled.

Good point Todd!,,I knew that from readin' the manual and from talking to Dale!
I still have quite a few left in there, and Like I said, with my paticular condition I just removed 4 on all three sides and now she works great!

this is new to me? I always thought the hand clutch and Hydraulic's shared the same hydraulic oil and the transmission amd rear end shared the same gear lube? |

I beleive they use the same oil just when you are filling it you can fill up the front thru the plug on the side of the handclutch gearbox. Then fill up the rearend thru the plug on the side where the transmission gearbox is. Its just a time saver i dont think they are completly blocked from each other.

The hand clutch, pto , trans , and rear end are all the same oil. I use 80 w 90 there because I use my tractor pretty hard and it seems to stick to the gears better. It also wont leak as fast! Both of the square fill plugs will fill this compartment and they do cross. The hydraulic sump is seperate and it is common for its seal to blow and pump its oil into the trans. I use 20 wt hydraulic oil in it because I seem to get a better lift. Just my 2 cents.

Ky is definitely correct. When the WD first came out in 1948 and shortly thereafter one of the weak points was the seal between the hyd compartment and the PTO, hand clutch, and transmission - differential. More than once we had to break the tractor and remove the Hyd compartment and re-seal it on both ends. The last seal design I remember was two seals facing in separate directions to keep the oil in the hyd compartment.

Hey Larry, Here's the INFO on setting the hand clutch.
To adjust clutch in tractor. Remove or add shims as required to obtain .065" clearance between clutch plates, with clutch disengaged, adjust shim packs accordingly to maintain an equal clearance all around clutch. hope this helps.

Thanks Don,,,unfourtionatly I didn't measure the gap,but I do know this, when I engauged the clutch the way I USE to do it,,this time it engauged and MAN did it go!!!
Didn't realize how much it was slipping.
Took it out this evening and pulled her real hard in 2nd gear and was able to spin the back wheels instead of just slipping and going real slow, something else it wouldn't do before!
