h-3 steering clutches

   just got the h3 running after sitting out side for 3 yrs moves forward and backwards but will not steer any suggestions for freeing up the steering clutches?  looks like the top covers come off rather easy?

	I guess I would lead it out to a tree you want gone and hold the sticks back and use corner of blade and see if it would break loose. Somebody will probably be along with better suggestions than I have. Good luck getting it unstuck... Had an old crawler that I thought I had used like 5 years prior... come to figure out it was closer to 13... YIKES!

	My HD-3 steering clutches have never been frozen, but there is a AC service Bulletin to replace the 5/16 bolts with 3/8 bolts which hold them together. You don't want to deal with broken bolts in that area of the tractor. The fix is outlined in the H/HD-3 service manual. The Steering clutches are driven with a shaft that is splined. The shafts slide back and forth to allow for clutch removal. One the shafts are free, you lift them out with the brake band as you would the larger tractors. Steering clutch removal is very easy on that tractor as opposed to some of the other brands. We are just finishing an HD5 steering clutch replacement project. I may be going out on a limb here, but if there is a problem with a steering clutch not releasing, it will probably not go away. We have had several Caterpillars brake loose by operating them forward and back, however, same holds true. I hope you can go the easy route as steering clutch repair is a lot of work even on an Allis Chalmers crawler.

	On ours we had to disassemble them to unstick them. We tried and tried by operating and pulling with larger dozer. Hardest part is getting the clip off axle shaft and time to take all the stuff over top the final drives off! Good Luck!
