H3 hydraulic valve float detent position?

I have an H3 with the 3 spool fender mounted valve with a float on the raise/lower circuit. The valve doesn't detent into the float position. If i hold the valve forward the blade will float but it won't detent and stay there. I think the valve is a gresen SP.....

Any ideas on what to look for and where to start?

check the end of the valve body away from the control. it should have a cap over it with 2 bolts holding it on. inside is the detent. pull the cap off and check to see what is inside, it may just need a cleaning and a lube up. post a picture for further details as i am not exactly sure what it looks like. if it is a standard valve, the detent should have a spring with it that may have broken.

The end of the valve has an internal plug that is removed with an allen wrench. I will go grab a picture and post it up.

Ha i wish that was the case. But it hasn't worked since I bought it in September. And now would really like the float position for plowing the many feet of snow that we have.

that is a little different style than i am used to but no matter, the detent is in the hex end of the valve, as the others do not have it, just springs. carefully unscrew the hex, a little oil may come out but really should be dry. see what is there, either a disk and ball setup or a plunger and receiver, which may be broke. see what it looks like and determine repairs from there. should not be any big deal, even if you need to put it back together until you can get parts. looks like an allen screw in the end for some kind of adjustment. it may just be rusty and need a cleaning. you can't mess anything up by removing it and seeing what is in there. post pics of disassembly if you have more questions. do you have a parts book to see what is in there?

I took the hex off last night and couldn't get anything else to come one. I do have a parts book but it doesn't show the valve in great detail. If I get time tonight I will dig into it a little more.

that end is where the detent should be. it maybe a magnetic disc or a plunger/receiver. push the valve to the float side and try to get a better look at it. there should be something bolted to the end of the spool that engages the detent. post a pic of the valve without the nut if you can

There is a screw in the end of the valve plunger thing behind the nut. But i can't get it off it must be rusted up solid. I will try to get a picture this evening and post it up.

Thinking about maybe switching to a single stick 2 spool valve to make running the blade a 1 handed operation. Is the H3 an open center or closed center setup? Thanks

Are you sure the valve body has a detent? Is that a regular H3 valve body? To have detent or float position the spool would have to be cut to allow oil flow from both cylinder to be open to free flow and to bypass pump supply back into return port.

I think its the valve body that came with it. It is a float valve but i think the detent spring is broke.

Not too worried about it now though as the hydraulic pump housing split..... So that is the priority fix now. Thinking the relief in the control valve bank isn't working.


Anybody know if an H3 is open center or closed center hydraulics? Thanks
