I have a d15 serial number 7840 it is 12 volt .my it shop book says it should be a positive ground but t don't appear to be that way. Is it spuppose to be a positive ground

if it has a generator, probably was +ve ground at factory BUT someone may have made it -ve ground so that jump starting it was 'spark-tacular' ! having all vehicles the same  makes it easy to jump them ! Now if it has an alternator, it really is a -ve ground as very,very few =ve ground alternators are made.

Check and see which battery terminal is run to ground. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just remember how it is configured.

All D15s left the factory as 12 volt positive ground.  At some point in its life someone probably changed it to negative ground.  No big deal, I do that to all of my tractors.

Talked to a guy a couple years back with a farmall and told me he was aggravated with the fact he only got one year out of a battery and did this for several years until he figure out the tractor wasn't neg ground but was pos ground, he said he would of never guessed it, once he changed it correctly, the battery was going on 3years and counting
