Got out the plow one last time for 2020

I remembered the nicer camera and tripod, this time!

So the secret weapon was taking the flap disc to the plow last weekend to help shine it up to start with this time.


So this is the result of maybe... 5 or 6 hours of plowing?


I can almost plow in a straight line even, haha. Wish I got a feel for how to straighten out a crooked row on the other end, though.


The front wobble of my pedestal is starting to annoy me while plowing though... May be time to jack it up next year and see if I can tighten the pedestal or if it needs welded and re-cut for the keyway. Does the shaft just drop out from the bottom if I jack the front end up over a "pit", or do you have to take the whole pedestal off to get to the shaft/keyway?

Great video !  Looked like a modern-day Allis promotional film and those those flatland  fields in the heartland are a far cry from our red hills in va !!

 Thanks for taking the time to film and take pictures and then post them too! That tractor says " come get on lets go to work" It so reminds me of our WD series tractors in there normal work days on the farm. 
The slop in front end: Well if it is in the key for sure there could be several things. If just loose it can be retightened. That is probably not the case. They get worn. safely jack up the front under the frame rails. Take the top cover off remove the components from the bottom of the shaft. Remove the shaft out the top. Then proceed to repair or replace any worn parts. Not the most fun job but the rewards are good every time you turn the wheel!

tractorboy -- Thank you! Well, I was fortunate to use the best flat areas of decent dirt for myself. There's plenty of fields and valleys and wash outs I wouldn't want to tangle with, haha.

Sugarmaker -- You're welcome! I went out and did another couple hours of plowing today and then knocked the dirt off with a wire brush and greased the plow and put it away. Will try and get a picture of my grease job and final plowing but it got dark on me today, I had to use my car lights into the shed to put everything away. Thanks for the info on the front end. What all comes off the bottom of the shaft? The keyway jam nut? I should consult my parts manual this weekend and see what I may be looking at.

The Nut, washers, axle assembly, bearing and I think a seal in there too. Plus the key. Then the shaft should be ready to pull up through the top. IIRC you can do that without having the grill off. But its been a couple days and I have slept since then too. You can do it! You may have to get the keyway and or key reworked. Now up in the top end if you have bad bearings that is another issue! I had bad everything on that last 45 I played with. Cant really remember finding a good part on it!Smile

Just watched your video again . Thanks for sharing . Our diesel D 15 came with a 3 bottom snap coupler plow but we've never used it . Kinda makes me wanna try it out . Thanks !!

This Maryland guy can never get over the rich black earth you have.
We sold a many of them for our red clay rocky soil.  Worked good too.  Bet they are real efficient in that rich black earth.

So went out today and tried to adjust the front nut on the pedestal and man it was locked up tight. Soaked it and finally with a 2 foot breaker bar, when the jam nut let loose the whole assembly unscrewed. I was able to clean the threads and put the bolt in another full turn from where it had been and then tighten the jam nut back down and I think I just got rid of half the wobble in the front end. Whoo!

That is awesome! Any improvement in the key will help. It is a good strong design but sees a real beating on these narrow front end tractors. I thing discing plowed ground, first time over might be the worst? Your plows look real good and next spring they will shine up really quick!
I agree with Bill also that is some nice ground your turning over. What is the next crop that will be planted there?

GG, it doesn't hurt to put some protection on the coulters too. I like Justice Brothers chain lube if you're going to use it on a yearly basis.

Sugarmaker -- Thanks again! Just to confirm, I tightened the bolt circled in red here... What is the bolt on the bottom? Is that just to allow the shaft to come out the top? Any chance that it needs tightened too?

Oh yeah, plowed ground with the disk is truly awful. Next year's crop should be corn.



IBWD Mike -- Good call, I will try and grease them next weekend!

I had to put a new grease zerk in one of them, it was packed full of grime and the hex head was almost rounded off.

 That bottom nut is where you would start the disassembly of the unit. and it holds it all together. it is a bolt and goes up into the center of the shaft.

Thanks Chris. Will keep that in mind for when I am annoyed to the point I strip it all down, haha. Will also do the steering knuckle at that point, too. Since I got some slop out, I may not jump right on that... yet... A few other irons in the fire, haha.
