A friend of mine is selling his father in laws m2 I'm interested in purchasing it what are common things to look for when purchasing one and would this be a good combine to start with I have little experience with combines

Hey Ben, 
I recently bought a M2, I'm not an experienced combine operator/ inspector but I usually look over the general condition like wear on augers, check the straw walkers for play in the wood blocks, check grain pan for holes. Most machines bin has rotted out by this point, I check to see how they repaired it, seen everything from tin metal off the side of a barn to spray foam, to a nice professional looking job with galvanized or stainless riveted in place. 

Check sprockets to see how they are worn, My F2 has some very sharp sprockets in need of replacing. Is it gear drive or Hydrostat? My M2 is hydro and I haven't used it in the field yet but I already like it. Any heads with it?

See if the leading edge of the cylinder bars are nice and squared off or are rounded. If rounded check to see if they have been reversed. If not been reversed then you have a new wear surface to work with.

As the others have said already. Chains and sprockets and cylinder bars. You can run into big mines if you end up having to replace cylinder bars. We always kick them in gear and do a walk around and look for anything unusual. Also check warning lights. If they all work that’s a good sign. I also like to see working ac.

We have an L2 and it is an excellent machine.

In my mind the weakest part is the drive for the walkers,grain pan,and sieves. Over the years the key ways ware on the top beater shaft. Causes the grain pan and sieve to not shack even on both sides,will cause them to break.

Did not watch mine close enough and broke the pan. To check make sure the sprocket on the right side of upper beater shaft is not loose. Also watch the chaffer at low speed and make sure it dose not move side to side,only back and forth.

As others have said quality of grain bin repair will give a little insight as to how the rest was cared for. Also check the bottom of the bin on the outside right before it gets to the swivel for the unloading auger. A lot of those are rotted out and ive yet to see a repair that was up to my standards including mine lol check sprocket teeth and make sure their not too sharp. Also see if ground speed, cylinder speed, engine rpm tach is working properly. Those sending units can be pricey. Also check reel speed and see if reel speeds up and slows down.

Just to add....
I just bought an M2 this fall also.

Many guys have told me that an M2 with a black engine and tan is a more desirable machine then the black interior and orange engines.

Condition is a big factor on a used combine, after that its just desireable options like a hydrostat and the variable speed header drive.

IMO get at least a 78 or up, preferably a 81 or up, with the hydro and you will be doing good.
Gleaner: the properly engineered and built combine.
