Hello I'm looking to get some advise on an L3 that a neighbor of mine has forsale. It is a 1983 model with hydro and a Borg Warner rear wheel assist hour meter says 560 hours but must not be correct. It has always been stored inside but hasn't ran in 2 years and has a broken "shoe shaft" he's not sure how to explain it. But it comes with a 6 row 30 inch corn head with header trailer and a 20 foot bean head with header trailer. he started out a $10,000 a year ago droped to 9 and now says $7500 for it all. Whats it worth?

It's worth that. I saw a very nice one sell for $28,000 6 years ago. Combine only, no heads.

We have 2 L3's, for 1000 acres. Easy to work on and good old machines. Shoe shaft is probably available through Agco or aftermarket. Rubber bushings are probably shot creating a vibration and shaft failure. Check everything good, hell, offer him 6k. If it doesn't sell soon, he will own it for a another year. Depending on condition, it's a bargain in my book. Good luck.

Depending on exactly what broke back there you might be looking at a pricey fix. I've seen the clean grain pan break (unavailable from agco and hard to find salvage) fall and break the top sieve. I've also seen the shoe ran after its broken and split the whole assembly to where it is basically unremarkable. I wouldn't go that high on it personally.

Depends on how it looks. If it all in good shape that’s not a bad price. The clean grain pan is all welded up on mine and I’ve had the shoe out twice. Last time I welded some 16 gauge sheet metal to where the eccentric arms mount to strengthen it up. Added 8 pounds but that was 4 years ago and I haven’t touched it since. Good luck

If it looks good all around and its what you want I don't think you will get hurt. If it's something you want to try to fix and resell I don't know how much meat would be left on the bone. Can you check cylinder bars? those are probably $1500-2000. Also tire condition. Also check chains and sprockets. if all those are in good shape I would think it would be a pretty good deal. If you get it and fix the shoe shaft, I would replace all those rubber bushings while you are there.
let us know if you get it and post pics if you can.

Replace all the rubber bushings including the ones for the walker pan. Do it with the shoe and pan in mid stroke. I took the arms off and used a press to push them on. Do not lubricate to aid installation or you will be doing it again within 100 acres.
