Question about options -- If a Gleaner L2 is a hydro corn soybean special does it have the 670T? or 649TI?

Thanks!

I had a '77 L2 hydro corn-soybean that had the 301 in it.

There you have it. You'd better go and look at the machine. If engine oil filters are towards the grain bin, it's a 301. If engine oil filters are towards the fuel tank, it's a 426. I've never seen an L-2 that wasn't a 426, but obviously there was one.

I had a '78 gear drive 301 and that '77.  I hate to disagree with the Doc, but they are out there.

You know, it might have been if you wanted the 426, it was only available as a hydro, not ever a gear drive. That's probably where I'm confused. 301's might have been either way, 426's were hydro only.

Hate to confuse things more, but I am not sure there is a definitive answer to OP's question. I think my dad's L3 was a Corn/Soybean Special. It was silver wheels, green stripe, had a 301, was a variable speed drive machine. It had a really nice Grammer seat. It had a horn. It had an am/fm stereo with nice speakers. It did not have the acre calculator, or digital tach. It had the single push in/out unload auger button. It had a light on the unload auger. It had the floating feeder beater. It had a belt drive return auger instead of the chain. The only floating beater L's I had seen before where Windrow Plus machines. It had big rubber. I thought ALL Corn/Soybean Specials where 426 Hydro machines...As well, my dads cousin had an L2, about 1978 I think he ordered. It was supposed to be a 426 variable speed combine, but I never eye balled it, so I cant say for sure. As well, my dad claims that when he bought his L3 1986 model, in 1988 new, he could have had a 359 Duetz aircooled inline 6 engine. I do not believe this, but who really knows. I also had a neighbor who had a new L2 with a split front window, a long and short flat glass. I have also seen an 1985 L3 with an orange stripe, orange wheels and it was badged Duetz Allis, so, I dunno for sure. Like Doc said you will have to go look, Trev.

An L3 with a 301 would have to be a dog, our L3 with the 426 even groans and puffs smoke when a slug of tough beans go through.
Dad bought it new in the fall of 85, it had the Deutz sticker on it...and still does.

Thanks guys -- This one has an 8 row corn head with it.  Almost has to be a 670T.  Serial number is L-K18559H which makes it a long shoe?

Never combined soybeans. I can tell you the 301 in my dads L3 must have been a special engine or something. It started easy. It was a fuel pincher. In hard red spring wheat and amber durum, it would run out of cleaning ability before it ran out of power. Picked up 30 foot windrows in 50 bush/acre crop, high impact northern conditions. You really had to push it to get it to smoke much. Quarter section fields, no trees, really didn't need a hydro. Any how, I know the split window was a Mexican built machine, what I was saying was how did it get delivered to the AC warehouse on Dewdney Ave in Regina Saskatchewan, to be sold brand new to my neighbor? I don't remember any other differences except it was a bit smokey, he sold it to another neighbor who still has it and a cherry M3 Hydro. Point is, stranger things have happened. ARAS will have to go look, but it is likely a 426. Trev.

A guy down here had one. He always called it the "Taco L2" Lol
I never saw it though. I'd like to see one with the split window! Surprising the L4's didn't have it.

L2 can be had in both big engine gear drive and small engine hydro. we own quite a few small engine hydros, and have a customer with a big engine gear drive.

IIRC the big engine was still optional with the corn soybean special, but I do believe it was standard if you got the Corn Plus option.

80 was the first year of the 649I, I dont recall how many years the 649T was still the standard engine, but at some point the 649I became the standard.

As long as you dont unload on the go, the little 301 does fine, but I am starting to think the gallons per acre figure might actually be more efficient with the big engine, as I dont feel we get tons done with the small engine L2s.
Gleaner: the properly engineered and built combine.

If you need parts for your Gleaner, we are parting out A's through L2's, so we may be able to help.
