I have a friend that has a D4 Hi trac sitting at his place taking up space and he is seriously considering cutting it up. If it weren't for the cost of cutting gases these days, it would probably already be gone.
It is a 1992 model and has some sort of engine problem that Cat says requires a new engine. The dozer has 2700 hours on it, so ought to be good for a few more.
  Anybody looking for a D4?

I have two friends with later model Cats, that is a correct statement as to the engines. Most of the Hi-Track units components are Chinese, Japanese or S. Korean and primarily crap, as it gets to a worn level they are just tossed and replaced. Engines are weak but the hydrostat trannies are the worst. 963 hilifts are getting cheap to buy as the undercarriage cost to replace are so high, $32,000 to replace what is necessary to keep them moving, with engines not making the turn on the third set of rails. Tranny replacement on a 963 is close to $50,000 with overhauls starting at $25,000.

Track life for the new style Cat undercarriage(System 4) is around 3000 hours where they get taken off to be pitched, no pin and bushing turns, no extended life on rollers, no re-bearing on the idlers, just pull and scrap.

Many of the local grade contractors are now leasing their machines for three years or one set of warranty undercarriage then send them back to Cat, as far as I am aware Cat here sends them south when three years old or over 12000 hours to Mexico or Central America.

D4H series 1 and 2 had 3204 engine. Best one of the lot to buy is the series 3 with the 3304 engine.
3204 is ok; BUT needs nursing; ie vigilent oil changes; watch air cleaners religiously, and coolant inhibitor. The 3204 is a solid cast iron block motor and only has 2 piston rings; oil and compression. It is virtually half of cats 3208 V8.
2 main faults with the motor; is blowby; worn bore or rings. And the bigger problem of pinhole in the block allowing water to enter the cylinder. Cat did make dry liners to sleeve them back to normal; but obviously is engine teardown and bore and rebuild for this. Even very badly corroded 3208s ive had bored right out and put a liner from a old D330 engine into, same bore size. So they are rebuildable with the right man. Mr Cat will just want to sell you a new dozer or new engine, both with there own electrical nightmares, that will drive a man to drink or bankruptcy. My views boys; and I have repaired quite a few cat motors; 3204 to D353 !!
tits tyres and tracks

they all cost you money
