What's the purpose of the plate on the right side of the upper part of the engine block? (I'm talking about the one that was eliminated on 45's) What does a person see if the plate is removed? Why would the plate ever be removed? Thanks for the education............O_O

I beleive that the tops of the lifters and the pushrods would be showing if you removed that plate.

My belief is that - at the time - the casting capability of the thin core required between the cylinders and the "plate" was not able to withstand the pour. So they tied the core into the sand outside the block thru the big hole that the plate covers up, so that it got the support it needed. When the technology improved ( probably better binders in the sand ), they where able to remove the plate and cast the outer wall inplace. Just my hypothesis...

There is no "hole" that the plate covers up, all you can see is the pushrods.

Jordan, I believe Dean is talking about the large cavity that push rods go through. The same cavity that the plate covers.
