I've been told ether will cause the engine rings to score the cylinder walls.  Does anyone have any info on this?  I generally put two short blasts into the intake pipe on my HD5G, replace the filter/cover and crank it.  Experiences and recommendations appreciated.
Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

we had a international 826 w/ the 'german' diesel, and whenever the temps dropped below 35  we needed a quick shot or two of starting fluid. we did this for years, from brand new to over 6000 hours never had an issue with the motor.

We used to have one of those auto inject ether dispensers on the D-19 D, till the ole coke-head, figgered out how to press the button herself, LOL!  On the serious side, ether is fine for American made diesels, and well made gas motors.  Where you run into trouble is using it on asian diesels, which have extremely thin piston tops.  Half a puff, and your piston tops are floating in the oil of your now disabled engine!

It really only takes half as much ether as a lot of people put down the intake. I read in a manual somewhere that you are to get the engine turning over then give it a shot of ether, about a one second spray. I know this is hard to do when you are the only  person trying to get her going. Have you ever heard that abnormal clacking sound when it starts up? that is when too much ether was used and is what causes the damage. so good battery AND cables and a little whiff of ether and you should be good.

On my HD5G / 2-71 there is 1/4" pipe plug in blower housing , I give it a shot there and then turn it over , that way I bypass the oil bath air cleaner. I drilled the plug and put a roll pin through the square so i have a small handle to remove plug easily.
It is best to give it that one second shot when engine is turning,   You can get carried a way and lock a engine up with either real easy.  WD40 also works as a starter fluid.
On 715B with Perkins sometimes in real cold I need to give it several short puffs over a minute or two as it is first starting to get it fireing on all 4

We have a Ford diesel backhoe/loader that will not start under 40 degrees. I did the same thing as Coke but I had to make a hole with a fitting. I get the engine turning over and have someone give a shot into the intake through the hole I made while the engine is turning over and it always starts right up. If you can get the engine turning over before you put the starting fluid to it they seem to start alot faster from the heat the cylinders are building up from compression.
Most all starting fluids have upper cylinder lubricants in them to help protect the cylinders. Just don't over do it with the fluid.

I used to have a john Deere diesel backhoe that developed a hole in the piston.... shop said it was due to too much ether.  Did they know what they were talking about.?.. I dunno.  Did I watch the use of ether from then on?... you bet.

You Bet. Just a little dab will do it. Too much and you are asking for trouble.

A few years ago I was hehping start tractors at the auction on a cold winter day. Someone gave a 1030 Case a little too much startins fluied. When they hit the starter with 24 volts to turn it over fast, it turned once and went THUMP. Out came a head gasket and the antifrezze, didnt start. They pulled it through the sale barn, no sale.
I did Not do it.  Richard
