I bought an HD5G at an auction Saturday, and hopefully a set of batteries will get it going. It has an alternator on it, so I would assume it is a 12 volt system, is that correct? And the alternator looks to be factory, again, is that correct? And last, since it has an alternator, that would make it a negative ground system, wouldn't it? It has no batteries in it now to use as a reference. Thanks, Darrel

since you question it's originality, somewhere on the alternator/generator should be stamped voltage and polarity. you can mess up a charging system with wrong polarity. starter does not care but alternator/generator does. one good size 12 volt battery should crank it well enough, that is all i use. good luck

It came with two large 6V batteies , one in each side, hooked in series to give 12V pos ground . Came with a generator that had a double belt pulley and used a cut-out relay mounted on generator.
