Oil Change Intervals

   B owner here. Awhile back on this forum, I found a post talking about going to two-year oil change intervals, but it's not coming up in search. I did a full service on my B last spring and basically just ended up using it for about two hours over two days as a run-around with no work at all. It's parked in a dry shop with a concrete floor. Considering a filter is $28 and I can get oil around $22, and UTF for probably $20-25. I'm debating going another year of only a couple hours running around. Basically, money is insanely tight right now and with diesel $7 a gallon where I live, it's forced me to quit driving my truck. I know oil is hygroscopic and I've always lived by the adage "oil is cheap and engines are expensive" but I'm curious what other people do on their tractors that don't do much. I may end up having to leave the tractor parked for another year. I was considering changing the engine oil, but reusing the filter. And keeping the UTF another year. I'm sure its been through worse in the last 80 years, lol.

	Running them for a short period of time or with no load on them is actually hard on any engine. Not getting it up to operating temperature causes condensation which is not good for any engine. I wouldn’t have an issue with a longer oil change if the tractor had been run and worked for at least an hr. A few of my tractors only get oil changes every other year depending on the hours I put on them. I always do a 100 hr change if not before that.

	Well, my usual operating procedure is to fire it up and let the oil pressure gauge stabilize and then back it out of the shop so I don't have to breathe the exhaust. I let it sit and idle until the temp goes up appreciably. I don't run the mower or tow anything until the temperature gauge is in the green. Last year I used it to pull a single axle utility trailer to haul some seedlings, potting soil and bark mulch around to plant a privacy screen along the fence in the pasture. It definitely was up in the green the whole time. It just wasn't a lot of work. And it's been parked since May or so- like 10 months without being fired up. 	i use to do every year... but changed that about 6 years ago.. Now i do every 2 years and skip the filter to 4 years...Nice to have fresh oil every couple years, but the filter should be good for SEVERAL years, if you look at the hours...... I have a B with a sickle and a B with a 72 inch belly mower that both get about 5 hours per year... Got an IB that i use quite a bit more, but i doubt it gets 50 hours per year... but still on the 2 year schedule... hydraulic oil should be good for several years, maybe 10.... dont forget the antifreeze.. New stuff is 5 years if your using the tractor.. setting like this could probably go to 10. Edited by steve(ill) - 1 hour 22 minutes ago at 4:02pm
