When I had my H3 I always connected them together as soon as I disconnected them from the hoe to simply keep them clean and free from risk of damage. I can't remember if I did this with the engine running or not.

I had a diverter valve on my HD4 but also to make a loop when bby-passing the hoe control valve the hoses needed to connect.
I would say YES. but just my idea .

i have a CASE 530 with two hoses that jump from the control valve back to the hoe. when the hoe is off, one of the hoses makes a loop back to the valve. It must be connected after the hoe is off, prior to starting the motor. I was told the pump would stall and possibly blow up if the motor is started as the oil will dead head.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

all my hoses were RATED at 2100 psi, and have a bursts pressure of about 4000.  I just bought all new hoses for the hoe and had they built at NAPA.  Note that athe oil goes thru your control valve, OUT TO THE HOE, back thru the control valve to sump. IF you dont have the hoses connected back to the valve, the oil has no where to go.
