WD45 final drives

I have the final drives off due to a couple of broken studs which I finally got out.  The question is what is the hole for below the seal in the final casting for?  I noticed it goes straight through to the inside of the drive casting.  It just seems odd to me that we have a seal on the shaft with an open hole below it.
