What’s a good way to tell if your false ring is going bad or worn down? To me, mine looks worn and pitted.

Never saw a false ring with any wear on it. The plastic ring from Lincoln Ag Products is still available. Now if you are talking about the stainless steel liner around the edge of the late 74 units - if there is a noticable groove where the seed discharge - it needs fixin'.  
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..
