Red Carburetor Washer/Gasket Material?

Anybody know what the red gasket material is that most carburetor sealing washers are made out of? I'd like to buy a sheet of it. I always end up needing to make some random size that either isn't included in the kit, or I only need that washer as the rest of the carb parts are reusable.

I can find a lot of red SBR material online that states it is for water only and not for use with gasoline, oil, etc. So, either most carb kits come with this material that is not gasoline rated (I'd hope not?), or there's something else I haven't found yet.

I am wondering if it is some sort of plant fiber combined with something else - along the lines of the last category listed here:


Thoughts? What do you use?

I work at a gasket company. You need buna nitrile, teflon, or viton. I use Garlock 2900. You'll want 1/32" thickness. I make the banjo fitting gaskets for the wc dual fuel zenith carbs.

Thank you! That is exactly the type of information I was looking for.

Any experience with how the shelf life on the 2900 is w/ no climate controlled storage? I can order a decent sized sheet of that stuff but it'll probably take me 5 years to use.


Go figure - Garlock even has a PDF directly addressing this on their website under the Documents section. 5 years sounds great.

Call draco mechanical supply, 800 732 5669. We can sell you a smaller sheet. Usually 5 year shelf life. 0.032" is the size I use. The material should be kept dry, it will absorb moisture if left in a damp climate.

Thank you - I already got a 1/32" x 30" x 30" sheet on order the other day. I will store it in the house.
