Things in the hay field

Youngest son and I were working outside yesterday.   We stopped work for a few minutes, about 3;00 in the afternoon. We'll be darned if we didn't see a mountain lion walking across my hay field. I guess I'll be headed somewhere today and pick up a 40 or 45 cal pistol along with a holster. I'm sure glad I got rid of all that lion bate commonley called an old goat or in my wife's case old goats. Im gonna call the DNR officer tomorrow.

My grand dad farmed near Jansen Nebraska, had beef cattle and work horses.  Somewhere in the late 90s he told my Dad and me that the DNR was going to release mountain lions in that area to reduce the coyote and fox populations.  Later, when Grandpa was away from us Dad said that Grandpa was too open to this kind of speculation! (You should have seen his Y2K preparation!) Sure as shooting, maybe 5 years later, the DNR admitted it! Grandpa was concerned for his calves and colts, of course, if those mountain lions had nothing else easy to prey, and he had reason for that concern!

I stopped at the body shop and picked up my van this afternoon. I told the shop owner about the cat. He lives down river east of me. He says there are 10 PR 12 of them constantly traveling up and down Middle river. Several years ago one of them killed his cow that was having a calf. I told him I thought I'd find a handgun I could carry in a holster. He suggested a 40 or 44 cal. The guy at the gun stores suggested a 10 mil, a 454, or something similar. I think I'm gonna hold off on buying anything new, I might check a pawn shop or two this next week.
