My instructor/airshow pilot friend Erik Edgren, every time I get lessons or on my bi-annual flight review we have several engine offs on takeoff. He really put it in me to get that nose down right away if engine quits on takeoff.

Airspeed,Airspeed,Airspeed!  I cant tell you how many times I have heard that.  Still a scary thought to have an engine out on take off.  About 20 years ago a 182 full of skydivers spun in after an engine out on take off.  Still makes no sense, there are fields perfect to land in everywhere!

Mike, I'm also a Champ pilot.

Rotor RPM and airspeed in UH-1/UH-60 helicopters for autorotation.   Lower collective immediately to maintain rotor and then adjust airspeed.  Around 70 knots in the UH-1 and 80 in the UH-60 gave the best glide distance and having rotor rpm to complete the autorotation.  There is some ability to shorten or extend glide distance but generally landing will be within a mile or so of engine failure depending on altitude. (float and glide like rocks).  UH-1 could use some rotor RPM to extend glide or avoid an obstacle and it would recover a little.  UH-60 not real quick and may not be able to recover enough for the cushioning at the bottom.

while I haven't had power failure on takeoff I do a simulated one evey year when renewing my glider tow check ride its required. I have had partial power loss after take off. at power reduction at pattern  altitude. I wound up with the throttle knob and rod in my hand no way to increase or decrease power. had to pull mixture and deadstick land. not a big problem, in my pacer it glides like a rock so I do a power off on most flights of more than one landing.
