How does AMCO Transmission work? Do they repair or replace? Do they repair your transmission or one like yours? Is the work done in the local store or is the transmission sent to a repair center? We have an '05 Camry in Wheaton, IL with a bad transmission and AMCO is an option for the repair/replace, but I don't have any experience with AMCO.

It's been over 30 years ago, but I took my GMC pick up truck there. It had the parking claw rattle around an damage some gears. They had it all apart and quoted $2,400!!!
I had them gather up the pieces and I had it towed to a place called Widco transmission in Hobart IN. They exchanged the pieces for a rebuilt transmission with a warranty for $500.  I ran it for years.
I would NEVER EVER go to AMCO again.

Bob, around here they’re known for high prices, poor work, and hard to get to stand behind their work

AAMCO not AMCO (if you're talking about the nationwide transmission repair shop), the owners also founded MAACO paint/body shops.

From what I have heard from another transmission shop is they have "cores" in stock or readily available from a warehouse they switch out of the original case. Actually rebuilding with a kit takes time and they rarely if ever do it, or charge a hefty price if they need to.

The only benefit I can see is a nationwide warranty if it fails away from home.

Like was said before, they don't repair, they replace with a rebuilt.  Had 2 Transit Connects that tranny went out around 140K, 3 days later was on the road and also they had me bring them back after a few days of driving so they could check it and then sent me on my way.
Maximum use of available resources!

When I started working for the car dealership years ago, I ask about taking a vehicle to them for tranny work. The boss said never again. He never went into it any deeper. We used a local guy that put HD after market parts into all the pickup trannys. I expect he put regular parts into the cars. We never had to send 1 back to him. Good luck with yours.

Couple years ago had the transmission go out in my '07 GMC HD2500 4x4. I price shopped and found the gm dealer to be as competitively priced as others so got mine from there with gm warranty and no problems at all. Good luck

I have seen numerous postings on FB MP for transmissions and for engines.  They show pics of a warehouse full of trans or engines.  If you can change it yourself you might google it.  I've done google for numerous parts and it come comes up with many listings.  They show the vehicle that was wrecked and list how many miles are on it.  I don't know what shipping would be, but I bet the whole deal would be cheaper than AMCO.

Brother worked for them for 6 months - said he wore out his 9/16 socket pulling and putting back in transmission , had one customer come in and he checked the modulator valve and it was bad but repair order said remove and replace trany .
Told the boss he could have car out in10 minutes " We REBUILD TRANSMISSIONS not fix them , no money in a cheap repair - Pull it out and get in back room - the guy would need a transmission sometime and we are just doing it now for him ."
Week later brother packed up his tools and quit -

Buying used is buyer beware, any aspect of abuse can come to mind where local yards here advertise same way.  Biggest issue is how much free time do you have to change the first one and can you afford the time off to replace the junker you just installed and fails on you when need to be at work?

Are some that you cannot avoid buying used, very old or end up with a damaged case where must be changed or pay a core charge on rebuild.  Trans in my 99F250 is a Jasper Reman 4R100.  Less expense than rebuilding the one in the truck, take cores no matter the damage and upgrade all internals as far as feasible.

I believe Jasper has a good reputation on engines and transmissions. Been doing it for over 50 years. Must do something right? I have a local guy who does good work. Trannys are all he does. 6 spd GM 1/2-3/4 ton $3500   older GM 4spd fwd $2500 out the door. Priced with everybody else around here.
