 Topic: Need help wiring router to phone jack

I have internet in the house through the phone company, 2 wires, wired to one regular phone jack, red & green that is then wired to a wireless router. I ran phone lines from the house out to my shop years ago and am wanting to set up a wireless router out there as wireless won't reach plus it's a metal building. The router I bought has a Cat 5 cable which has 4 wires, Blue, Orange, Black on the left side and yellow in the middle. Don't want to guess and screw up home internet unless I'm gonna be out of town for a few days and give the wife cool off time.

a CAT 5 cable should have 4 PAIRS of wires.... Your looking for the BLUE and WHITE/blue ......... unless your cable is different from standard CAT5

I have narrowed it down, the thing is, only 2 phone wires coming in, router has 4, I figure only 2 are used, I just need to figure out which 2. I have an idea using the SWAG factor. Here is a pic of the Cat 5 cord to the router.

The two in the middle that are GONE are the BLUE and WHITE.... Pair #2 are on each side of them GREEN / GrWHITE ... Pair #3 in on the end ORANGE/ OrWHITE ...Pair #4 is GONE on the opposite end...
It is either ORANGE/ OrWHITE ............. or GREEN/GrWHITE...
the SOLID ORANGE or GREEN matches to the phone RED... the mate WHITE is the Green phone wire

My guess was; Orange Cat5 to Red phone line and Green Cat5 to white phone line. I will open the box on the side of the house tomorrow and give it a shot.

it should be wire in PAIRS... The WHITE STRIPE wire goes with the mate SOLID wire.

Where is your wireless router in the house? You can try a wifi extender in a window in the barn. My main router is in the basement, I put an extender in the cabinet above the microwave. I can get wifi on most of the property, and in the barn. I took an old dongle down to the neighbors plugged it into his computer in the barn and hung it in the window and he got wiifi. He can't get phone calls in the barn, but he has wifi.

I thought of that but with the extender, you loose about 50% of your wireless speed and the whole reason for the wireless is I have group meetings for work in the mornings and my work computer is wireless only. With the lag on slow a connection could lead to problems answering questions.
I see our local phone guy around town every once in a while, I'll probably hold off until I can catch up with him also.

Normally yYou need 4 wires ( 2 pairs) to make the router work. 1 pair(transmit and it's ground, receive and it's ground). My cable modem ( internet/tv box from cable company) has a 'telephone jack' RJ11 that the home phone plugs into as well as a 'internet jack' RJ45.
There's no way you can run internet through 'telephone wire' as shown in Steve's picture. 'CAT5' cables are 4 twisted PAIRS of wires, 'Quad' is just 4 wires in the same cable.
You should post the make/model of the box you have, though Google can find/show how to do whatever you want.

Jay, im not sure i understand your post.. You are using a CABLE line input... In the USA we have something called DSL... Dont ask how it works, but you plug your router into the phone jack and it uses 2 wires to send and receive the signal... all done INSIDE the router box... You can also have a phone plugged into the same two wires... but need a filter on that line. --------------------- How many wires are needed for DSL? Your DSL signal will come to the NID over two wires in the telephone line and thence to the dsl "modem" where your ethernet cable would connect. Your telephone voice and dsl will run over the same line. Usually, one employs a filter at the telephone to filter out the noise of the dsl signal.

Sorry for piece mealing info, I don't realize sometimes everybody can't see what I see. It is a 2 wire DSL, house has 3 phone lines, I once used one for personal one for business one and when DSL became available, I called the phone company, they said there were 3 pair coming to interface box so he just hooked the third pair up and came in and separated my phone wire and wired one outlet for the router.
The new router is a Netgear AC1200.

hmm..bifocals son't work so well THAt far away  Yeah DSL is different........ Most everybody uses CAT5 ( RJ45 jacks) for Ethernet....I was going by the cable wrongle assuming it was a 'cable' modem....
Sounds like JW has a '3 pair drop' ( 3 pairs of 'phone lines' ) from the pole. I have a 6 pair drop (same price). Sad thing is there's 144 fibreoptic lines across the street and only 8 are dedicated to the casino up the road......

dsl only uses 1 pair but it needs to go to a dsl modem. your dsl modem could incorperate a router. mine did not so a cat 5 cable went from the modem to the wireless router. i no longer have dsl it was replaced with fiberoptic and my router now plugs into the port on it. to extend it i just run a cat 5 cable from the router to a wireless extender. it wont work wirelessly trough the steel lined steel pole building that is my shop

The more I investigate this the more I may have more unit than I need or can use. With the bad weather, everybody is staying home and internet is super slow now anyway, especially with the wife watching movies. I may just pedal this unit and buy another. I’m having to think waaaay too hard on this project!

Side Note, standard 4 wire phone plug will insert where the Cat 5 goes, lines up correctly as have a old corded phone I use on occasion in a Cat5 jack when power goes down.

You needn't bother with a phone line to get Internet service. Indeed, most link organizations offer Internet service by connecting the coaxial link line to an exceptional link modem. The link modem can change the link signal into an Ethernet signal, which can be appended to a port on your PC.
