What's everyone's experience/opinion on the Zenith carb on a 170?  Are they better/worse than the M-S on a 175?  How about parts availability comparison? Has anyone put the 175 carb on a 170, and if so, what needed to be changed to make it work?  Thanks for any input!

I'm now curious as to why you think 1 "might" be better than the other Confused ?? I can't believe that parts aren't readily available for either carb Smile .

Well, a couple reasons, I don't have any experience with a Zenith carb, I need a new main jet needle assy., and I haven't seen it offered anywhere either.  Saw a couple on ebay, but not sure if they are correct.  Haven't tried NAPA for this yet.  Also wondering why they put the M-S on the 175, is it a bigger carb than the Zenith?  M-S more reliable?  More questions than anything right now is all.

The Marvel is technically larger because it flows more air. Why they didn't use a larger Zenith ?? I don't know. Can't answer you that one, Bunky.

Thanks for the replies and the link, Gentlemen!  Alex09 has a needle assy., so I'm going to put the kit in that I already have and try it out.  This tractor sat for a long time and the inside of the bowl is pitted, I had it cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner as well, so will see how it works.  I see ASAP and YT both have rebuilt Zenith carbs for sale, but haven't dealt with either on carbs, anyone have experience with this?

There are several vendors that support this site that will have carburetor kits priced competitively.

Just a heads up for anyone else using the NAPA kit in the above link, it is not correct for the Zenith 13294 carb on the 170.  Hopefully not stepping on anyone's toes, that's not the intention.  Just trying to save someone else the hassle of finding out the hard way is all.

Would you have a new throttle shaft?  That's part of the reason I thought I'd try the NAPA kit as it had a new throttle shaft in it.

A 170 carb throttle shaft is unique to a 170 Zenith carb because it is mounted backwards on the engine.

The throttle shaft on this one is worn, but maybe it'll be good enough to get the tractor to run.  Engine was stuck when I got it, have since gotten it loose, along with a couple stuck valves.  The carb must've sat with fuel and water in it too, as it's pitted some in the bowl area, main jet needle was rusty and pitted too.  Hopefully the rest of the tractor turns out good when I get it back together.
