The lastest I heard it could be a CAT4 by the time it touches the shore. It's building big time as it comes across the warm waters of the Gulf! I feel for all those folks down there. Can't do a damn thing but RUN! Looks like it's dialing in on the oil/gas refineries.... Oh boy, not good!!

Due to the forecast storm surge they evacuated the National Weather Service office in Lake Charles. Their radar is down this morning so that means an equipment outage of some sort. The building and radar both have UPS and generators so I'm thinking the broadband lines to the office failed.

We already have linemen heading that-a' way. We got new tires on our bucket trucks for the trip, went over the engines and hydraulics and sent them on their way. They left last night. You may see some Jersey Central Power & Light trucks on the news. Our First Energy Compares are heading from PA. & OH. also. Its not lookin' good. 20 foot storm surge they're talkin'. Yikes!

These are pics of the NWS Lake Charles doppler radar. The part sticking up on top of the tower is the pedestal. It is about 20' tall. The black circle is a entry hole. Two people can fit inside, standing up. The antenna dish that would be attached to the pedestal is 32' in diameter. That is a short tower, probably 40 meters. The one I worked on was 100 meters, A days hike! The first pic is the original installation. |
