I want to change oil in the generator, ONAN 5500, on her dang trailer. The data plate says sae 30 or 10wx30 or 15wx40. Back in the 70/80's when I was in the oil business all lp powered equipment used low Ash motor oil. It doesn't say anything about this on the data plate. All I can find on the ONAN page is diesel or gasoline. Anyone know for sure? Thank you.

Chevron Supreme ISOCLEAN® Certified Lubricant SAE 10W-30 is a premium automotive motor oil that protects against deposit and sludge formation and provides excellent wear protection to critical engine parts. ... A low ash, dispersant/detergent type oil for natural gas applications.

I clicked on SHELL ROTELLA and it makes no difference if you pick 10w30 or 15w40 ... almost EVERYTHING is Low Ash these days.

I'd choose the heavier oil, it's gonna be run in summer heat!

Affirmative on Shell Rotella being low cash. Friend had a 930 Case LP and he used Rotella oil. He called it his "Camper Special"!

Ash was a lubrication additive that tended to precipitate out, was in a lot of older oils but reformulations have pretty well done away with it.
