I think the turbo is going out on my 96 Freightliner with a Cat 3126 engine. Squeaks like a bearing is going. Limped it home in a snow storm a couple days ago. Took the serpentine belt off to make sure the alternator, AC compressor and idler bearings were OK. Needs a new belt but when I started with the belt off I still heard the squeak. I was looking online and find a EMUSA turbo, brand new, for $350. Anyone have any experience with them. BTW I only drive the truck a few thousand miles a year.

yep! yer lucky, everything I only use about 1-2 times a year usually costs me about a grand to get them going!

$350.00 sounds chesp compared to if it comes apart and goes threw the engine

I agree tadams, I got the turbo off the truck and nearly apart. Am thinking I'll see if I can just buy the innards - bearings, shaft and seals. Cost less then a couple hundred bucks and might even be US made. The turbo is Cat brand, suspect they buy it from someone else with their name on it.

Turbos do not have 'Bearings' as such most have floating bushings, float In the housing and on the shaft so they ride in a oil bath to reduce friction. If squeaking probably has had a bushing or lube feed failure and allowed the blades to contact the housing or a housing has come loose and shifted or warped on the exhaust side. Better off to get a reman or a replacement.

I took the turbo apart and see what you are talking about D miller. The shaft seemed a bit loose but I noticed some build up of what, for lack of a better word, calcium on the intake part of the turbo, which is made out of aluminum. I can't see where the blades touched the housing but may have just barely touched them. Thinking of buying a new or rebuilt cartridge as the rest of the unit is in good shape. The engine has good oil pressure and everything seemed to be well lubed in the shaft area.
