I know a guy who has been hitching rides across the country since we graduated high school. He is basically a bum .He survives by the generosity of strangers. He calls his mother every mothers day so we know he is still alive. I talked to him a few years ago. I asked what does he do when the cops pick him up .He says " I ask them what's for supper? I am hungry. " They usually figure he is worse off outside than in a dry warm cell and give him a ride to the next County like you all are saying.

had a guy hitch hiking to Sioux Falls to get back with his family. Had a job 40 miles south in Columbus NE that ended up not going well and ended up not getting paid. Guy just wanted to get back to Sioux Falls Sd back to his family but didn't have much money. Last ride he hitched brought him to the town i work in part time. He planned on sleeping in the park. I gave him a ride 25 miles North to the county line. I bought him lunch and took him to my deputy friend in the next county. Between my deputy friend and I we were able to get this guy a ride up to Sioux Falls SD with fellow LEOS we knew that lived along the way. Guy was just down on his luck and maybe showing him kindness wil get him to help another person down on their luck. Oh and as shameless said sometimes cops do give rides to PITA people just to get rid of them LOL

No wonder this state is full of trash. Hay we could send them west in the ponga boats(15 to better than 20 foot open boats with 2 or more big outboards) the Mexican drug dealers leave on the beaches. But the tide would bring them back, dang that jet stream.

here they give you $300 a day credit for your fines have had several work for me that would pick up trash one day a week to pay off fines they would watch the weather and show up if it was going to rain and would get sent home and get $300 credit for showing up. If you go in on weekend you get double pay, and some times they run specials where you get 2 for 1. had several that would disappear for a month and pay off a 10k fine for dwi where else can you go and make $600 a day tax free had one frequent flyer told me which city he liked to go to because they always brought him a menu from mcdonalds to order his meals from.

Back in the 1960's I heard many times of trouble makers being given two choices by the judge, Jail or the Army.

oh...and you know the jails will furnish you with fresh clean clotes to wear while you are enjoying your stay there, and they will wash and dry and fold the clothes you came in there with. kinda like a full service hotel...all for free if you have the time! oh...yeah...and while in jail, you learn of all the "good" places to rob or steal from. so it's educational for the chitheads too!

yep….if you are a repeat trouble maker and generally a PITA to people, the law will give you a free ride out of the county! they don't wanna mess with you! that is usually for the ones that make it their living mooching off each county, usually in bad weather giving them a warm/cool dry place to stay with free food! they have no money to pay fines with so they stay and are fed free until they "pay" off their fine in jail. last I heard several years ago if you were in jail "paying" off your fine, you got credit for $6.00 a day until it equaled the fine amount. prolly more now. it's a win/win for the chit heads. some places put the jail birds to work, like walking the road ditches picking up trash. those chit heads only made that mistake once! they stay away from them counties!

Well,,,I know back in the early 60's if you was a constant trouble maker,,the police would give your parents an opportunity for you to "leave town" and no questions asked,,,,,,, Yep,,,thas right,,My cousin was always a chit-azz and habitual criminal and always gettin thrown in jail,,,after so many arrests, my uncle had to take him to California with a solomn promise never to return,,,,and he never did,,until my uncle passed on and he had to apply for permission to return to funeral. BuT,,he was escorted out again and finally moved to Arizona where he passed on a couple of years ago....

Has happened here a couple of times. Back in the 1960's some clown hitchhiked into town and was causing trouble. Deputies picked him up, gave him a real rough bath, which he really needed, and cut his long skanky hair, treated him for lice, Hauled him to the county line. Come to find out he was a Canadian citizen, the Canadian embassy logged a complaint. The deputies had taken pictures and had signed complaints against the guy. Copy's were sent to the embassy, nothing else was ever heard about him.

Giving him time to think while he is walking. The deputy probably gave a bolo to the next country. Around here they lock them up and the judge turns them loose.

Other day when I was on the job delivering chemical, I run across something that I just didn't think was quite "2018ish". Quite a ways ahead of me, I seen an on-coming car pull off on an approach. A passenger got out and started walking my direction, I could see as I got closer. Now not to judge a book by it's cover, but this passenger didn't exactly look like an up-standing citizen, and the car was a county sheriff's car. And the approach where all this took place was right exactly on the county line. And after I got by, the sheriff followed me all of the way to the county seat. Putting two and two together, I assume that this sheriff decided to pass the trash onto the next county. I am sure that the guy who got put out to walk, got instructed not to show up back in that sheriff's county. But what's the next county supposed to do with him...? Send him onto the next county....? Now this fella must have been a bad'n, so it's kind of hard to feel sorry for him. But it was extremely hot that day, and it was a good 10 miles to the nearest town. Is this the old west, or is that the way cases still get handled everywhere? Darrel
