OK, my 30 year old Lincoln AC-225-C 'buzzbox' needed a new switch. NO local repair shop,so nearest one want $300+taxe (and gas 120miles(there/back twice) so close to $400. As I ponder option, I email the head office and get a price for the switch...$40
I see the welder on sale so I buy it for $380 with a 3 year warranty
Then UPS shows up today with a new switch for my old welder. It took me an hour to replace the switch and needed my pops 70+ year old 250watt soldering iron to do the job.
So do I return the new welder,or keep 'just in case'?
Now I'm thinking to making the old one, a DC welder, cost will be less than $100 in parts and couple of hours. Kindof a 'back burner' project.....

Jay, send it back. I bought a precision tig 185 years ago. I haven't used the ac 225 but once since then. That tig runs reverse polarity, ac, dc, and it lays the nicest beads I have ever seen a stick machine produce...oh and I have since bought a pt 275, it is just as nice as the 185 but the additional capacity and duty cycle make it shine.
Just my opinion...

If you can make the DC welder , DO THAT...... I sold my buzz box in 1993 and bought a 225 amp MILLER DC........... bests decision I ever made .... I don't know how to MAKE a DC welder out of the AC... but your right, you already got 75% of the parts !!

Take that new welder back and buy more rods.....
IF I knew how,,,,,,,I'd turn it into a AC/DC in a heartbeat. You know how to do all that stuff, so,,,,,,,,,,"Git er done".
You can make a video of how you do it and then the rest of us idjuts could learn how....

lots of videos /sites about it just google 'converting ac welder to dc' one I found http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php?353121-Lincoln-225-conversion-to-DC I've found a big diode bridge for $40 to replace the 6 smaller ones .need to get a dead micrrowave too... oh well, on the back burner for now.

took my Miller 180 and built a fullwave bridge for it to make it a DC machine - works OK but then i bought the POW CON unit with wire feed and DC as a unit . (most small DC machines are 1/2 wave rectified) The Pow Con is full wave but the frequency is boosted so the lag between waves is small - also uses high voltage transformed up (inverter technology) to make full unit lighter and higher duty cycle .
So now I have my Miller 304 unit also which sons girl friend says is hers now as she does all the welding for him on his skid loader attachments .
I have a bunch of 500 Amp diodes now left from when I closed the shop is worked in - we had a large plating area and these were from plating rectifiers that were about the size of refrigerators . Keep thinking I need to sell the dang things as sure dont need them now, but most people have no idea about diodes that size or high of amperage.
