hello i have the motor out on my 1951 WD- i pulled the main bearing in the rear and got that half of seal out and replaced-but the top half is in this retainer and i loosened the bolts but they hit the end of the crank where you bolt the flywheel on,  do i have to pull the whole crank out to change the top piece of seal,

Sounds like someone put too long of bolts in the retainer, You might pull the front timing cover and all three main caps off lift the crank up a little to get the retainer out and then put in the right bolts when you go back together with it. Its a good time to put new front seal in too.

  our experiences are the pan gasket is leaking more often than the seals  my 2 cents

Might be glued to the block still. Did you tap it lightly to see if it's loose? You'll never get these old style seals to completely seal up. The rear seal is made to leak a very little bit. I agree with norm on the pan gasket.

ok i got new front and rear seals, 4 pan gaskets, pto gear box seal, and new clutch, and orange and black heat paint for motor-  should be back together today - thank you all

My experiances are about the same as Norm's. Another place they leak is between the rear main cap and block. There are two little gaskets that go in there that are often not in the cheapo gasket kits and just as often left out by unknowing mechanics. I leave them out on purpose and use a bead of silicone there.
