I'm going to change all the fluids in my new (to me) D-17.
The manual says: "Use only a special transmission oil merchandised by your
"Allis-Chalmers" dealer".
I assume that means "expensive".
Is the D-17 supposed to use gear oil in the transmission like the WD-45 or a modern Hy-tran oil.
I guess when I drain it I'll see what the prior owner used but that still won't
tell me what is correct.
Thanks

Brian, I believe you can use Hy-tran in the tranny on both the WD45 and the D17.

The shop manual says use sae 80 EP, but I have heard many people use the universal tractor fluid in the trans with no problems. Todays oils are far superior to what was available when the tractor was built.
