It is important to know what style pitman you have.  The early style used a ball swivel that clamped over the knife head ball with a bolt, nut, and leaf spring setup, while the later style used a coil spring that fit in the end of the pitman to hold the swivel halves tight on the knife head.  The early style is the simplest, and you could probably work out the correct length with some careful measurements of your mower, and after that it wouldn't be hard to make up a pitman that would work just fine.  The later style might be more sensitive...
