I have a 1956 WD45 that keeps losing the gap of the points. I'll set the gap, drive the tractor for a few minutes and then it kills. After searching I finally figured out that the points were closing. Any idea what I can do to stop this from happening?

I don't know, but I have some spare gap laying around if you can't find yours!

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself. I'm in an ornery mood!

I suspect that the screw that holds the points in place after you set the gap may be stropped and not holding. When you go to reset the gap, does it feel tight? Unless that hold down screw loosens I don't see how the points could move together

Hello Roy   Is it possible that the dist shaft is wore???  or the plate is loose??  Do you have a dwell meter to check while running?

If the screw isn't stripped, the cam may be wearing the rubbing block rapidly because the cam is rusty or dry or both. It needs a tiny bit of grease than won't fly off.

In most cases from my experience rebuilding these Delco Distributors is the oilite bushing inside is worn causing the main shaft to wobble changing dwell constantly. Pop the cap off, grab the rotor and see if you can move the main shaft side to side bout' 3-5 thousands. If so, main shaft and or bushings are worn. Time for a rebuilt. The 45's usually use the Delco 1111735 or 745 Distributor. Have both units rebuilt/exchange on the shelf ready to go if ya need one. When the rub block is worn crooked, it will never hold the gap correctly. Dwell will always change...   HTH

I agree with Steve . I wll also add that I checked four delco  remmy allis chalmers distriutors 2 weeks ago and found the star wheel  that opens the points as the rotor turns to be worn and measuring different on all four distributors and some of the ramps being a tick off from each other. Thats why I have started building the Gm style four pin distributors. newer technology no wearing parts other than shaft bushings .350 shipped ready to run.
