Folks,
The D17 has been setting out at my daughters. I thought I better stop and see if it would start. Also some shots of the 3 point:
She fired right up!



I also noted the location of the stop screw on the governor cover. This is out about 3/16 to 1/4 inch  further that the WZ engine. I think I may be able to get some additional rpms from the old WZ? Just need to get a device to check RPM, which I have been procrastinating on.

It looks exactly like the 1 dad bought new with a 17 mounted picker it the the fall at 1959. It was a hold over from the previous year. I grew up on that old gal, baled 10's of thousands of small round bales with it. Dad ordered a wide front to go under it. As soon as we were done picking usually around Thanksgiving the handyman jack came out and we put the wide front end under her. Dad's had over 30000 hours on it when an old boy came around and wanted to buy it. Dad was in his 80's and he sold it to him. I saw it 2 years ago and it looks better that the day dad bought it new. You do have a keeper there. Have fun with her.

Tom, Folks,
Great story on you family 17. Wish we would have had one on the farm too.
It would have been a good work horse. This early D17 has the wrong decals and the wrong color grill and wheels. But it has been the best of the used tractors I have brought home. It just works good and has had no major issues! I plan to do some brusk hogging with it this spring, so having this 3 point on it will work out just right!
Also would like to try to have a club plow days this spring. Not sure if I would take this or the 45 with the snap coupler 3 bottoms. Another dream!:)

Chris,
I would like to make a suggestion for one little modification to your top link bracket.
You will notice that just below where the bracket makes a 90 deg. bend down for
bolting to the holes formerly used for the PTO guard, there is a nice heavy flat "boss" cast into the housing.
This is a good place to drill and tap for at least one 1/2" bolt so as to provide more
strength right where there is a lot of stress on the bracket as implements are lifted.
The 3PH built by the prior owner of my D-17 placed two 3/8" bolts there.
I retapped them to 1/2" and reinforced the bracket.
In your case, the "pin stands" on the bracket appear to be in the way of easily placing two bolts there.
On second thought, simply redrilling and tapping the existing holes to 1/2" might work as well.

 Thanks that's a good suggestion. The 3/8 studs are not as heavy duty and 1/2 would be.

Folks,
My daughter called and said the the D17 would not start. Said it started ran for 30 seconds and quit. Jumped in the truck with battery charger. Stopped at gas station and got some fuel. (noted that they were filling the big underground gas tanks at the time).
Got to the tractor and it would pop once and then nothing.
Gas gage show empty. Visual look in tank showed it was very low too.
Dumped in about 8 gallons of gas. Still would not fire. 
Seen a drop of fuel coming out of the carb. Assumed flooded. 
It has a zenith carb. No drain. Screwed out the main jet and allowed the carb to drain.
plenty of fuel flow, so not starved or plugged from tank to carb.
Looked at the sediment bowl and it was cloudy. Loosened and removed glass bowl and let it flow. Gas still looked cloudy. Assumed water in tank from setting outside for a long time in hot humid conditions, and or water from the gas station? Drained the sediment bowl several times. Actually got water in bottom of glass bowl again about 1/2 inch deep. Dumped that gas and let flow longer. 
Then I thought it might not have spark. 
Took right side hood off and set against the rear tire. I knew better than doing this! Played with the points till I got spark. 
Back to the gas and drained more cloudy gas. Tried it again. Drained the carb again. 
Tractors finally fired up, sputtered and ran with choke out a little. 
Told the daughter to pull it ahead. She did! Then stopped in about 4 feet. Said, "Dad the hood"! Yep ran over the back latch corner. Luckily she stopped in time and did minimal damage to the hood panel. My fault not her's. Bent the corner back to near shape and installed it back on the tractor. Fit a little tight but latched up and will be straightened better at another time. Wouyld be hard to tell it was damaged. Made me mad at myself!

Moral of the story: Take a little more time and get things back together before making the next moves. 
Or set the hood panels out of the way. 
I believe the culprit, behind this little adventure, was for sure water in the fuel.

Ouch! Glad it wasn't any worse than a hard-to-see bend. Glad you got her running - and proved once again that engines won't run on water!!

congrats on the "new" D17, Chris
A '58 D17D was our main tractor for 10 yrs; hard to believe now.

This will be a good chore tractor for you.

NOW would be a good time to soak those clamps and locks on the wheels.
Kroil or PB Blaster Penetrant work well, as does 50/50 lacquer thinner-ATF
