Have an opportunity to buy a HD5 for $800. Engine is bad, but comes with 2 spares. Supposedly undercarriage is good. Thinking this is a pretty good deal. Tractordata says they are 30-40hp but other sites says 2-71 Detroits are closer to 50-60hp. Wondering what would be correct hp. Has a blade on it, but, don't know what brand. Gonna try to get a look at it later this week. Kinda in the doghouse about it already. Got the OK from wife, but she's not really happy bout it. But about a month ago I bought her new tires for her Yukon ($790), so she said I could spend that much on myself  .

Surprised salvage yard hasn't already bought it for that price. Very good engines. I think parts for them are fairly easy to find as they used them in a lot of machines.

That's kinda why the guy that has it now, has it. Bought it on an auction cause he didn't want to see it go to scrap. He has already done a Cat D2, and just picked up a TD12 International. So not really interested in the Alli's. Said he will sell it to me for what he paid.

Put a 3-71 in it,makes it in to a real machine.Think the only thing needs modified is the driveline.

About 48 HP is what i figured - think it's rated at 38 HP but 42+ on belt . I turned up RPM some on mine over governor setting - get a little more HP to track .

I think the early ones had A 2-53 MOTOR IN them, so a little less HP

The beauty with those old Detroit engines...you can put bigger injectors in for upping the horsepower. It's likely to have 55 injectors now to make it around 50 HP but you can put in 65's or even 70's for more power...even tweaking the timing will give it more snort. You will also use more fuel with bigger injectors . Old truck wreckers will sell you used injectors cheap.

Well I bought it. It is the 253 (figure 8 on the sleeves) so low horsepower. He's even gonna help me swap engines and get it running, plus deliver it. Can't beat a deal like that. Helps that wife's dad and couple of brother in laws worked for them over the years. Couple pics I snapped tonight.

If it is a 2-53 the 65 and 70 injectors would be too rich. I tried 65's in a 6V53 once. I got good cold starts and OK power but once you gave it full throttle it just turned into grey smoke.

Coke, while googling stuck steering clutches, I came across an old post of yours about letting them soak in diesel fuel. Was wondering how well that worked, and if it hurt the fiber discs?

The steering clutches are a combination of fibre and metal discs assembled together. The fibre discs that I have replaced have retained moisture and expanded. If the machine is used often, and the compartments are kept dry, no big deal. When we did our HD-5, we went with bi-metalic discs. They will not absorb moisture and do not stick. Something to consider.

To try to get steering clutches un stuck remove debris from the clutch cavity, put pipe plugs in the drain holes and add solvent. Disengage both steering clutches and drive the machine. It never worked for me. Search "steering clutches" on this forum there are several postings.

Soaking them is mainly to remove any oil that might be on them - it may help break bond of rust also depending on how bad they are stuck . I did it a few times on my HD 5 projects but in present machine i have ceramic HD11 friction plates . In the other 4 or 5 machines I worked - I stayed with the fiber plates - I still have a stack of about 40 used fibers - some good some worn - and a few metal discs. If they are stuck now - breaking them loose can be a problem
