hello to all,
new member here that needs advice. I am running a wd motor with a 45 crank 4.125 flat top pistons and custom cam. I want to run 2 gear in 4500 class with 14.9x28 tires. should I stroke to 5" and cut the pistons or go with a different combo. The carb is a marvel with no ID tag, the air intake has a 1 5/8" ID if this helps. I built this motor 13 years ago and stopped pulling after 3 years until now so I cant remember the cam specs. The cam was done T.Richardson in NC. or SC.

Any reason in particular you want to run second? Not paced pulling?

Yes some pulls are divided in to divisions and I would just like to trie something different.

I would think you could run second with that combo and spin out more often than not.  Is it dying in second?

Yes it will die out in second but will not die out in first even standing on the brakes. I am just looking for that extra hp in second but not go to radical on the engine.

I have not done a compression test yet but I will and let you know. Is there any way to tell witch marvel you have by appearance or measurements? When I bought it from an old allis dealer used I was told it was a gleaner carb. It also has electronic ignition from Denny's carb shop if that makes a difference.

If you have a Facebook account go to allis wc @ wd pulling engines. You will find a fellow by the name of Brian Morrison there he does what your wanting to do but does it in third gear with 38 tire

150 psi isn't much when it comes to pulling. A standard D-17 engine has 145 psi per AC Service book. A standard 170-175 engine is 170 psi or a little more. You could stroke your engine provided there is no ring edge in the sleeves, and get that compression up to 240-260 psi would help a bunch. Might want to consider using newer connecting rods from a late D-17 or 170 or have yours heat treated.

If I get my rods heat treated what Rockwell do you recommend, and would I have to do any machining on them or would they maintain their tolerance?
