On a plain wd where do you find the timing marks there is no whole like a 17
You can wash the dirt off the body but you can’t wash the farmer out of the heart and soul

Open the small cover at the bottom of the flywheel cover... There is a mark on the flywheel that you want to be in the Middle of that hole, just as the #1 sparkplug fires...(compression stroke).

ok are you talking about the tin shield under the motor in front of the flywheel or the clutch inspection hole under the flywheel

The timing marks on the flywheel are on the O.D. of the flywheel at the point where the pressure plate is attached to the flywheel. Remove the small cover for greasing the throwout bearing. You'll see a "pointer" cast into the bellhousing at 6 o'clock straight down to align the flywheel mark with. The flywheel has a TDC mark and a "FIRE" or "F" mark which is 30 degrees BTDC. Normal timing procedure is done at wide open throttle (1700 RPM) to align FIRE mark at that speed.

If this engine has been modified for Pulling, such as raise the compression ratio, total ignition timing usually needs to be retarded from 30 degrees BTDC. How much retarded??? depends on what you have actually done to the engine. Best results are achieved by adjusting the ignition timing on a dyno for maximum performance. One of my tractors is around 16 degrees BTDC and the other is about 20 degrees BTDC.....two completely different configurations.
