Just rebuilt the tiller for my 712 and remembered the problem that popped up at the end of last year when mowing. Mower would run well for about 30-40 minutes and then shut off like the key was thrown.
Immediately we checked fuel, spark and compression. Replaced points with no change. WE ran it with the gas cap loose.
Did not change coil or condenser and will probably start that next. Anything special about the coil before I pull one from my shelves and try it?
Calling for 70 today and tomorrow, so I might make a pass at the garden to turn up weed seeds.
30 bunches of onions arriving in a couple of weeks, so I want to have everything prepped.

if the the coil is working i think go looking for a wireing problem or wore out switchs

Are you able to start the tractor then it runs for a little while then quits? When the engine shut off were you able to restart it or do you have to wait for a while till it cranks?

Well it only hit 69 today or I would Steve..... Will not immediately re-start. The longer you let it sit, the longer it will run next time. Takes about 20 minutes to restart at all, and 45-hour will buy you 20-30 of run time the next go around. It will crank just fine after dying. One of the boys last summer neglected to turn the key off after it died, and even after sitting an hour it would not start. So I'm leaning towards coil or condenser. I could see coil being different than the 4 cylinders, but would the condenser be any different?
BTW got the tiller on, and made a short pass at the garden. Didn't have enough gas to try and run till it quit.

I think you're looking in the right direction. I had one with a bad coil act like that. It would get hot then quit. As mentioned above check in the wiring to see if you have a connection that could be getting hot and breaking down. One other thing to look at when checking is the sleeve connectors becoming loose like the ones on the amp meter or circuit breaker. I have taken them off and put the wire on the studs with a connector and a nut. When I've had those problems before it wouldn't crank at all.
