Quite awhile ago, I mentioned that I made a mistake on my first 190xt on it's year when I made my ID.  I thought I had a 68 when I checked the serial numbers but in reality I had a 67 190XT.  So, one of the forum members said, maybe in jest and maybe not, I should buy a 1968 190xt to correct this.  So, I finally did it!

I overpaid for it but it is in nice condition.  Had the next highest bidder decided to add $100 to their bid, i wouldn't own it.  Here are the details:

As a comparison on the clutch pedal and drawbar, I am showing my 67 and 68 pics.  Here is the clutch pedal on my 67.  Unknown hours but most likely 10,000+ hours.  Completely missing the diamond on the outside of the clutch pedal.


Here is the 68 clutch pedal.  Plenty of diamond left.


This is the 68 tach cable.  I think it is original, rusted metallic spiral wrap instead of plastic like on my 67.  Tach says 3880.  It does work.

Here is a full picture of the 1968 190XT I bought.  No surprise to anyone on the forum that the wife got notified about 5 hours before it showed up and didn't go over well. :-)



It has been repainted but I think it was a long time ago. I don't think the decals are correct after repaint.  There are no leaks on the engine or hydraulics.  The clutch is tight, brakes are good.  Not a lot of blowby but some.  Everything works, pto, 3 point.  Nice new seat and a new steering wheel with the AC medallion in the middle.  Tires are worn but not horrible.  Tin is good, nose grill good.  The electrical wasn't good but I am fixing it.  Turns out the key switch is bad so it wouldn't start.  Positive cable from starter was rigged and bad.  Key switch ran down the batteries so replaced it.  Didn't have a block heater but I am adding one.  It showed up in 20 degree weather so we drug it off of the trailer.  It did get to 60 degrees, I removed the tiny car battery and added two tractor batteries and started first turn.  Sounds good and runs strong.  Lights work.  Injection pump is a Standayne unlike my Roosa on the 1967 but seems good.  Wheel weights are a plus, although it does not have the spinout rail system.  There is still an oddity to how body panels are arranged.  There are some gaps in the top hood so it is like it is out of alignment, but not sure how it happened?  The side console aluminum plate is faded and not legible.  it does have all of the knobs on all levers though, unlike my 67.

I haven't seen a 68 nice one like this in a long time and I got outbid last time.  So hey, I got a 1968 190xt to match my forum id finally after 8 years on the forum!  How crazy is that!  Going to be hay raking tractor this summer.  Is it a 3880 hour tractor?   No way to know for sure but doubtful that a tractor that is 57 years old has that few hours but it could be.  The older tach cable is encouraging.  Someone took care of it though regardless  all along the way.  Curious if anyone knows the history on it?  Came from Brillion, WI and the Tesch Auction in case anyone knows the history.  Dealer sticker is Villard, MN and they are still in business as an Agco dealer.   Sticker looks older style though so they could have resold it years ago and not the original dealer.  Might send them a picture to see if they can date the sticker.

Unfortunately, my 1967 is going to be more expensive to fix than buying this one so I went in this direction.  When I retire, i may try to rejuvenate my 67 because it was my first Allis and ran good for me for 8 years despite all of the hours.  Got me hooked on Allis Chalmers so hard to part with.  Hope this one is just as good!

Congratulations on your new purchase and it’s a nice one! Sounds like you have a good start on making repairs. I also have a 1968, bought in 2017, went through it fixing anything it needed which was quite a bit!! Pump rebuild, 6 puck clutch, brakes, hydraulic pump rebuild, gauges, and so on….spent 10 months of my spare time getting her to where she is today. Including a complete sand blast of all sheetmetal, paint, decals which I did myself. It’s a great tractor and I love farming with it.
You will enjoy making hay with it, it does really well with a square baler. One of the best tractors AC ever made IMO, ahead of its time in many ways.

Seams like I seen somewhere that someone reproduces the aluminum console plate but it was pricey. I had my local machine shop duplicate one out of stainless steel and then used my label maker to make new labels. Obviously not factory but it looks pretty good.

Thanks for your reply.  I really want to fix it up someday but for now it is going to be busy.  I know A&W sells those aluminum console plates for $140.  

As we all do when we acquire a tractor, I wish I could get more history on it to the point of verifying the hours but it is probably a pipe dream.  

When I say it has been repainted, it may be only sections of it.  My serial number is 19573.  According to the agco parts site, serial number 19,000 up to 23,000 should have the "XT" decal on the front side shield.  It does not have the "Landhandler" decal on the rear side shields though so those may have been repainted.  The motor has had a coat of paint at some point for sure.  The dealer tag is on the hood and that may not have been touched or repainted.  Still trying to figure out what I have.
