Hi a’ll!
So I know the power shift not able to roll without the tractor running but how about the power director? Even with the 2 speed power shift? This question has been eating me away for awhile and in case I ended up with one that didn’t run… |

If you’re talking about a 7/8000 series they will roll unless the range box is in park.

As Creston said, they'll roll unless in park. I'm not sure about how far you should tow one, but around the yard or whatever, no biggie. And these 7/8000 series don't have a PD neutral, they go to low once you push in the clutch, and engine off.

So even if it’s been sitting for a long time (let’s say 20/25 years)? |

My 185 Manual says
If the tractor must be towed from one location to another the transmission must be out of gear, engine must be running, and the power-director clutch must be engaged in either high or low range. The above instructions must be followed otherwise the transmission will not receive proper lubrication. |

The neighbors towed their 7080 about 3 miles; took out the pinion bearing, due to lack of lubrication.

If im not mistaken the rear end is pressure lubricated. If it were me id get a wrecker with a axle lift to pick up the rear end and move it that way

Sounds like a question for a model specific Operators Manual.
Without knowing the model it's a hard question to answer.

From my 7060 manual
Transmission (no difference) in neutral. Range transmission in neutral Towing speed (in capital letters) not to exceed 5mph. Distance not to exceed one half mile for an inoperable tractor. If the engine is operating, engine speed is 1200 RPM minimum to provide lubrication to transmission/rear end.(book states moving parts) |

Trans in neutral, range trans. In neutral and you should be good to load and get into shop.
After you get her going, don't take it down the road until you've driven it around slow to get oil into range gears. MACK

Haven’t got it yet because it’s on an auction and only if it goes cheep….
Don’t even know if the engine is any good being the owner thought he blew it up… Said it blew black smoke all over and he shut it down, but that was 25/30 years ago. |

Might have just been the turbo, but surely will be an OH now. The muffler didn't remove itself.

I did notice it has the famous crack in the manifold but it is also missing the engine dipstick and bottom of the air cleaner…

It appears to be a late serial number tractor. Bosch injectors. No, don't pull those tractors very far, they use pressurized oil for critical transmission bearings, bushings, and such. Shame to see machines fall into such disrepair. The day that it failed would have been a better time to get rid of it. At that time, it would have still had decent value. I would expect it to be cheap and as a buyer,it better be.

Even scrap price by weight would be more than I'd give. For what you're gonna have in it you'd be ahead to pay for a GOOD runner.
